We normally don't review store exclusive titles that are also being widely distributed by way of a standard edition sold at all outlets, but with the immense popularity of the 'Star Wars' franchise and the new films under the Disney regime in particular, we've decided to offer a real-world glimpse at some of the store exclusives available to buy beyond the standard wide release, which has been reviewed here (Blu-ray) and here (UHD). Skip below to the "Supplements" section on this page for a review of the Best Buy exclusive packaging.
This Best Buy exclusive SteelBook release contains the same Blu-ray and UHD video transfers as the wide release counterparts. Please click here (Blu-ray) and here (UHD) for full video reviews.
This SteelBook release additionally contains the same DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless (Blu-ray) and Dolby Atmos (UHD) soundtracks as the wide release counterparts. Please click here (Blu-ray) and here (UHD) for full audio reviews.
Of all the store exclusives, the SteelBook generally appears to be the most desirable, if forum fanaticism is any indication. For the Best Buy exclusive
SteelBook release of The Last Jedi, the retail giant has foregone the simpler designs of The Force Awakens and Rogue One in favor of a busier poster art/character montage featuring
all of the
essential hero figures -- Luke, Rey, Leia, Finn, Rose, Poe, Chewie, BB-8, C-3PO, R2-D2, and, yes, look hard, Porgs, as well as Rebel ships like the
X-Wing and the Millennium Falcon -- atop what is clearly the blood-red grounds on Crait. The "Star Wars" text on the front is debossed, a nice textural
add, but the words "The Last Jedi" are not. The spine is a simple dark gray, which stands out from a smaller near-white unblemished Crait-surface
coloring. The movie's title is spaced across.
The rear panel, which upon purchase is covered by an informational and removable J-card, is imagery of the film's villains, including Kylo Ren, Captain
Phasma, General Hux, Elite Praetorian Guard, and some enemy vehicles like walkers, Star Destroyers, and TIE Fighters. Inside the case is a beautiful
image of the beginning of the battle on Crait, featuring Rebel ski speeders kicking up the white top layer and revealing the blood-red surface
underneath. Inside are the three basic discs, the Blu-ray and UHD film-only discs and the dedicated Blu-ray supplements disc. Of course, a Movies
Anywhere digital copy code is included with purchase.
Best Buy's exclusive SteelBook for The Force Awakens deviates from the simpler designs of its previous counterparts (including going all the way back to the standalone original trilogy and prequel trilogy releases, which featured single characters against a black background). Still, it's a beautiful presentation but, ultimately, it's what's inside that counts, and the imperfect but fairly fun movie looks and sounds amazing on both formats. Very highly recommended.
