So. . .what are you doing on December 18? If your first response is something along the lines of “How should I know?”, you’re obviously not partaking in something along another kind of line—namely the queue forming to get into Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens on its first day. The frenzy is already building, at least as evidenced by the incredible reaction to the recently released trailer for the new film, and that excitement has no doubt contributed to Fox’s decision to re-release the first six films in new steelbox packaging. The releases keep the original contents of the discs containing the feature films included in Star Wars: The Complete Saga, meaning that aside from those feature films, the supplementary material is limited to two commentary tracks per film. Blu-ray.com's policy is typically not to re-review releases which are being put out again with only packaging differences, but due to the immense interest in the six new steelbooks, we've included a few (low resolution, per the format of this kind of review) photos of the set so that fans can have a peek in case they're interested in picking any or all of these up. (Please note that due to the reflective surface of the steelbooks, the photos had to be taken without direct lighting on them, meaning that the Darth Vader cover especially looks a bit dark.)
Video quality of the films is addressed in the Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray review.
Audio quality of the films is addressed in the Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray review.
Each of the six new releases is comprised of a sole disc which includes the feature film and two commentaries, one with George Lucas and crew, and the other cobbled together from archival interviews with cast and crew.
The force is obviously still strong with many fans in this galaxy right now, and these new steelbook releases offer some handsome packaging for those interested in either double dipping or maybe picking up a few stocking stuffers for the holiday season. Highly recommended.
