Paramount has released a monumental 54-disc Blu-ray set spanning the entire television and film legacy of the famed Captain Picard. The set incudes every season of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation,' each of the four feature-length 'TNG' films, and all three seasons of the new TV series 'Picard.' The set also ships with several goodies sure to entice the most ardent 'Star Trek' fans while shipping in a very attractive box that is suitable for prominent display in any home theater library or 'Star Trek' collection.

As noted above, every disc in this set is a Blu-ray; TNG and Picard were only ever released on Blu-ray, but the TNG films were released to the UHD format. However, this set does, at least, include
the remastered Blu-ray discs, which are vastly superior to the original 2009 discs. Please click through the links below for full 1080p video
reviews of all of the content in this set.

Star Trek: The Next Generation:

The outer box, or the part that is the red top, is rather big, measuring at just under 8" wide and deep and at about 4.5" in height. The inner black
bottom (together they make up the colors of the later season TNG command uniforms with the red shoulders and black body suit) measures
just slightly smaller by length and depth (the red top fits snugly) but does measure nearly 7" in height.
The top red element pulls off to reveal the contents inside the lower black box. On top, in a space cut to fit, is the book "The Wisdom of Picard,"
edited by Chip Carter. It is exclusive to this collection. There is a long nylon pull strap to help get the book out of its shell. The book is hardback, red,
and is over 200 pages in length. The full color glossy pages include conversation excerpts, famous quotes, and full color photos. The book measures
at
approximately 6" wide, 6.25" high, and a quarter of an inch in depth.
The shell that holds the book is removable. Underneath is the rest of the content. First, fans will find a certificate of authenticity; the collection is
limited to 11,750 units. There are also five magnets in the shape of the various comm badge insignias seen throughout the Picard era. The set also
includes a pack of playing cards (an homage, no doubt, to the TNG crew's proclivity towards poker). The cards come in a box with the United
Federation of Planets logo on it and the same design on the back of each card. Unfortunately, the front of the cards are basic white with the classic
numeration, colors, and stylings. Four fairly flimsy coasters are included that advertise "Chateau Picard." They are red and marked with the "Picard
Legacy"
writing. I doubt they would hold up to long-term use. Nestled into the box next to the playing cards and coasters are the cases holding the
TNG films and Picard seasons 1-3. They both ship with exclusive red slipcovers (not for individual films or seasons) featuring the
same art
on the Blu-ray case. The double set of TNG seasons is found on the other side under a tab with the word "engage" written on it in gold. The
two
massive cases that hold the seven TV seasons have the same red artwork, but no slipcovers. Every disc artwork is unique to this set and includes
"Picard Legacy" markings. TV discs are red and the feature film discs are a yellow-gold color.
The only problem I encountered were several loose discs in one of the TNG show cases. See the final
screenshot of this review for a photo of what I found.

Star Trek: The Next Generation:

There's a lot of value here. From the outside, the set looks great. There's plenty of great swag inside as well. However, it's going to be a tough purchase for most for a few reasons. First, of course, is the price, which is quite a bit to swallow in one go. Second is the size, but for hardcore Star Trek fans, size will not be an issue; it will be a prominent home library or Star Trek display piece, and righty so. Third is the absence of the UHD versions of the feature films. And, finally, fourth, most Star Trek fans probably already own most, if not all, of the discs in this set. It's a very specialized release, and for those who can afford it and those coming into the Blu-ray discs for the first time, it's a must-own. Others should carefully weigh all of the factors before committing to a purchase.
