In celebration of its 60th anniversary, Paramount has released the original 'Star Trek' TV show to Blu-ray...again! The show has been released multiple times to Blu-ray over the years, both as standalone seasons and as massive full series collections; there are too many to link to individually, but this one is the most recent. That is another 60th anniversary issue, but it's a disc-only release. This pricier but meatier release includes some additional goodies that differentiates it from the other. Star Trek: The Complete Original Series 60th Anniversary Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

Unlike the other 60th anniversary TOS full series release (linked above), this one contains some nifty additional goodies. At its core, however, the release shares the same collection of 60th anniversary branded discs, which are otherwise the same ones released so many years ago, including the same video and audio presentations and supplements. But this set does offer alternate case and slipover artwork. I personally like the one here a bit better. It's brighter and bolder, with a white rather than dark red background. It retains the same character layout on the front, but the support elements are more reminiscent of the 2021 SteelBook design, which I like quite a bit. So, I am definitely more partial to this release. But it's more than an alternate artwork issue. It ships inside a yellow box that features the Enterprise zooming upwards towards the top right, with an array of colors on and behind it. The show's title is top left, and the 60th anniversary logo is at the bottom right. All of that is embossed. The outer box is not particularly sturdy; mine arrived so badly damaged at the corners that I requested a new one, and the new one shows some dings and dents just from shipping. The box is made of two pieces: a top piece slides over the bottom, and both are oversized and don't fit together tightly, which is where so much of the flex and potential for easy damage comes from.

But inside is where things get fun. Included, beyond the full set Blu-ray discs, are nine attractive lobby cards, eight featuring various cast images and one depicting the Enterprise. All are suitable for framing. The real highlight here, however, is a mini vinyl soundtrack that includes the show's theme song variations on one side and a handful of Star Trek sound effects on the other. It comes inside a slip cover, which is itself tucked inside a folding cardboard sleeve. I must confess that I don't own a record player and could not test it, but it's got me itching to track one down and give it a spin. Track listings for both sides are printed on the sleeve, which shares a similar design to the outer box in terms of its yellow color, but it also depicts the main bridge crew mid transport. Overall, I love this whole set; I just wish the packaging was a bit more robust.

Like I said, I love this set...but I still think that, for the price, Paramount could have done more. At $150, what's here is a terrific start, and I even love the vinyl, hearkening back to the days of the original series. But this seems like a missed opportunity for a model Enterprise or something to really entice the fans, or, maybe, a "pop-up bridge set" akin to what Sony did with the the tournament scene in its Karate Kid boxed set. Overall, however, as a Trekkie, I'm happy to have this in my collection. Recommended.
