Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 1 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 20, 2021

CBS/Paramount has widely released a SteelBook packaging variant for the digitally animated, adult oriented animated series 'Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season One.' The disc content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

CBS/Paramount's glossy-smooth SteelBook is, externally, of a predominantly dark black outer space color and will show handling fingerprints. Both panels, and the spine, for that matter, build one continuous, seamless image depicting the U.S.S. Cerritos flying through space (the ship is essentially a hybrid of Enterprise-D and the U.S.S. Reliant). On the front, filling much of the frame and blending right to left, is the bulk of the vessel's saucer section. Also visible is the left nacelle, the top of which is glowing a bright orange. A starfield appears behind the ship, as does a golden, swooping line. The show's title appears up top; "Star Trek" and "Season 1" appear in a golden color and "Lower Decks" in classic TNG blue color and font. The spine continues the image from the front and reveals that the golden arc from the front ends in an arrow, pointing up and to the left. The show's title appears above center, very small, as it's presented on the front with the exception of "Season 1" having moved down further on the spine. A silver CBS logo appears at the top and silver Blu-ray and Paramount logos on the bottom. The rear panel completes the image, showing the rest of the saucer section and the right nacelle. These take up most of the right-center frame; the rest is a black starfield. Along the bottom are CBS and Paramount logos, legalese, and a model number.

Inside, the two Blu-ray discs are situated on their own hubs on the left and right sides. The inner print is a two panel spread that depicts the four main characters -- from left to right D'Vana Tendi, Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, and Sam Rutherford -- running from a giant spider-like creature. There is some lush green vegetation seen around the frame.

Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 1 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Mediocre show, solid SteelBook. This one's very nice, featuring a focus on the beautifully designed Cerritos spread across the entire front panel and a fun image showing abundant color and the four main characters on the inside. The A/V presentation is solid and a good number of extras are present, too. Recommended.
