Star Trek 50th Anniversary TV and Movie Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman October 21, 2021

CBS/Paramount have released a massive 50th anniversary 'Star Trek' boxed set that includes all three seasons of the live action original series, the complete animated series, and all six feature films to exclusively star the original cast. See below for a breakdown of what's included, links to individual reviews, a written review of the box, and various real-world photos. Note that for 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,' Paramount has included the 2016 re-issue.

The outer box measures in impressively large 11.5" across, a shade under 8" in height, and 2.75" in depth. A transparent slipover of the same dimensions is included, which contains all of the back matter information (product mock-ups, a list of everything included, tech specs, and so on and so forth). The front of it includes some glitter which, when the slipcover is placed on the box proper, makes it look like the crew is in the midst of being transported off the Enterprise; a simple transporter room mock-up (essentially a few vertical gold bars) houses all seven silhouetted main crew members -- left to right Chekov, Scotty, McCoy, Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and Sulu -- identified by body shape, posture, and uniform. The series title with the 50th anniversary logo appears bottom center in gold, all situated against a black background. When the slip is removed, a golden Enterprise seen from the top down appears centered, below the midline, on the back; a single streak trails it, which wraps around the side and merges into the transporter room set. Both box spines feature the 50th anniversary logo as well as CBS and Paramount logos. The box top includes the title as it is depicted on the front; the bottom side is blank.

The inner box pulls out from the main box's right-hand side. More gold adornments await on the main secondary box, similar to the transporter room background, across the bottom. A single gold horizontal line runs around the full inner box perimeter. Housed inside, and removable from the top, are the various discs and extra content. Of course, there is the three season TV set which is housed in a box that is oversized long ways, running about 7.5" in height. It is a basic clear multi-leaf case much like the standalone full series set released in 2016. This one features the classy gold-on-black coloring for the slipcover front while adding some color to the spines and rear panel in the form of various starships (see pictures in this review). New artwork appears on the case insert proper and one of the cool touches is that each disc features unique artwork that represents a key character, ship, or thing from one of the included episodes, albeit in silhouette. For example, Gary Mitchell is seen on the very first disc. It's great stuff and fans are going to be thrilled to look through them. The case's rear artwork shows each disc and lists the corresponding episodes appearing on each one. The feature film Amaray case is much the same in terms of design, albeit presented in a more standard sized height.

Non-disc physical goodies inside the box include a magnetic Starfleet insignia pin celebrating the franchise's 50th anniversary and a collection of six collectible replica art prints, each representing a film in the franchise, illustrated by Juan Ortiz.

Star Trek 50th Anniversary TV and Movie Collection Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

This is a very attractive box that fans are going to love. It's essentially the entirety of the content featuring the original cast: three live action seasons, one animated season, and six feature films. At time of writing the two TV series are still only available on Blu-ray, and this represents the best available presentation, but the first four films have been released to the UHD format, rendering these included discs as only the second-best option on the market. Perhaps Paramount will one day revisit the TV series and the last two films on UHD and release another box, but it'll have to work hard to be as elegant and collectible as this one. Very highly recommended.
