Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

An entertaining comic-book film with an outstanding 3D presentation

Growing up an avid fan of comic-books and animation, one of the the go-to heroes in the shuffle was none other than Spider-Man. The character is one of the most magnetic and inspiring creations in the world of comics. The idea of the web-slinging legend is one that truly “sticks” with us (pun intended): even an ordinary person can become extraordinary.

Blending together the realms of multiple threads in the great Spider-Man mythology, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the rare animated comic-book film that has a knack for adventure, action-packed intrigue, and comedy all rolled into one. The film won the coveted Best Animated Feature Film award at the 2019 Academy Awards and proved that a comic-book film can be awarded one of the ceremonies most prestigious honors.

The animated comic-book adaptation focuses on the story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a young African American who encounters a variety of other Spider men (and women!) from across multiple dimensions, including Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacey (Hailee Steinfeld). As the kin unites and finds threats lurking around every corner, it's up to the Spider-heroes to save the universe (for everyone). Can Spider-Man save the world?

Anyone can be a hero.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Swinging on to home media in eye-popping 3D from Sony, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse features a 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded high definition presentation in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen. The results are spectacular (pun intended!) with a fantastic 3D experience that is remarkable to behold. The film has some fun pop-out effects and some immersive depth that brings viewers closer to the story and the Spider-Man universe.

The bright, colorful, and engaging animation on display is consistently mesmerizing to behold and helps to create a beautiful canvas that all Spider-fans can appreciate for years to come. The image is consistently sharp, clear, and dynamic without any disappointing drawbacks in the form of ghosting, crosstalk, and resolution loss. When viewing the film (utilizing a passive 4K 3D display), it appears mesmerizing from start to finish. Spectacular, indeed. Spider-Man will come swinging home into the audience with stellar 3D that makes the film even more exciting, action-packed, and sensational (again, pun intended).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The Blu-ray release includes a jubilant and engaging 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that spins spider-webs with ease. The release is enormously engaging in its use of the surround sound channels and the overall experience is one which showcases the sound-effects with stunning clarity. The track excels and is far from being a slouch (and fans won't even miss the lack of Atmos or DTS: X audio).

If there is a minor inconvenience, its that the 3D edition released in Germany contains a few title cards with German text. This includes a few scenes with comic-book bubble-text (all in German). While the issue could have easily been resolved with seamless branching when the English language track is selected, it was not implemented. Some viewers may wish to take this element into consideration (because there are other editions available which may have English text throughout the transfer). Nitpicking aside, Spider-Man fans worldwide will be enormously pleased with the dynamic audio, even if occasional texts are in German.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 3D Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

The Blu-ray release includes a selection of engaging supplemental features which are provided on the standard 2D Blu-ray disc (which is included in this two-disc 3D/2D combo pack edition). Please note that these bonus features are the same as what is provided on the standard Blu-ray release (which is also available separately). No extras are included on the 3D Blu-ray disc itself (as the disc instead focuses on presenting the 3D film in the best quality).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is an action-packed entry in the Spider-Man mythology which has enormous fun with its swinging-for-the-fences concept. There are a few standout aspects of the filmmaking to commend: the breathtaking animation, the exciting score, and the absorbing 3D. Fans of 3D films will find it to be a must-see in the format. The animation is much more engaging and dynamic to see in 3D and it weaves a spider-web spell that is impossible to ignore. Don't miss this in 3D, folks: it's as spectacular as Spider-Man.
