Born to race cars, Speed Racer is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized - the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer, the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner but uncovers a terrible secret - some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line. The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie, Speed teams with his one-time rival - the mysterious Racer X - to win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Available alongside the standard 4K edition (as well as a very cool-looking Limited Collector's Edition import that's on my radar), Warner Bros. offers this appealing Limited Edition 4K Steelbook of the Wachowskis' underrated 2008 family film Speed Racer, last issued as an early-format Blu-ray with VC-1 visuals and lossy Dolby Digital audio.

For a synopsis and similarly warm take on Speed Racer, please see the 2008 Blu-ray review linked above.

NOTE: This review's screenshots are sourced from a new retrospective featurette detailed below, which features AVC-encoded clips from the newly-mastered film rendered in 1080p/SDR. Therefore, they should not be considered a truly accurate representation of the 4K picture in terms of HDR color, fine detail, or brightness levels.
For my thoughts on WB's new 2160p transfer, please see my review of the standard 4K edition.

Likewise, details about the new Dolby Atmos remix and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track can be found in the link above.
Optional subtitles, including English (SDH), are included during the main feature and all extras listed below.

This one-disc release ships in Steelbook packaging that goes all-in on its racing motif, depicting both Speed Racer's Mach 5 and Speed Racer's Shooting Star on the front and back, respectively, set against a colorful futuristic backdrop. Inside is a splash image of the Mach 5 racing through Cosmopolis with the 4K disc on the right side. It's a sleek image that could've used a character or two, but I'd imagine fans will like the aesthetic here. A Digital Copy redemption code is included, and the bonus features offer a mixture of several new-ish featurettes in addition to most of the legacy content -- only the experimental "Crucible Challenge" game is missing, but no big loss there.

The Wachowskis' Speed Racer suffered a premature death back in 2008. It was meant as a fun and fan-friendly detour but mostly crashed and burned instead, yet its reputation has improved quite a bit since then and I sincerely hope that Warner Bros.' welcome new 4K edition continues to push it back towards more widespread acclaim. This Limited Edition 4K Steelbook advances upon the standard 4K edition in packaging only, sharing the same top-tier A/V merits as that release. Both are Highly Recommended to fans and first-timers alike.
