Born to race cars, Speed Racer is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized - the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer, the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner but uncovers a terrible secret - some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line. The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie, Speed teams with his one-time rival - the mysterious Racer X - to win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Only available as an import and for a short time, this Limited Collector's Edition of the Wachowskis' Speed Racer is a more substantial package than both domestic 4K options: the regular UHD version and a Steelbook variant. This brick-sized release does include the same Steelbook that we got... but it's also housed in a deluxe outer case and includes a variety of pack-in-goodies. There's also a Blu-ray copy of the film tucked inside, but don't get your hopes up: this is basically the same VC-1-encoded disc we got back in 2008, and it really should have been newly-remastered to entice more buyers. Even so, it's a great release that should attract fans looking for something more than a slipcover.

For a synopsis and similarly warm take on Speed Racer, please see the 2008 Blu-ray review linked above.

For my thoughts on WB's new 2160p transfer, please see my review of the standard 4K edition.
Please note that the included Blu-ray copy of the film, though VC-1 encoded like the 2008 US release, is the dual-layered (BD-50) UK 2008 Blu-ray rather than the BD-25 we got in the States. Word has it, though, that this is due to more foreign language audio options and the actual film bit rates on both discs are identical.

Likewise, details about the new Dolby Atmos remix and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track can be found in the link above.
Optional subtitles, including English (SDH), are included during the main feature and all extras listed below.

This two-disc release arrives in a sturdy and attractive outer slipbox that is mostly matte-finished but includes spot-gloss elements and a reflective shine on the logo and other elements of its familiar and white-dominant design. Inside you'll find a Steelbook that's more or less identical to the one released Stateside: it similarly goes all-in on the film's racing motif, depicting both Speed Racer's Mach 5 and Racer X's Shooting Star on the front and back, respectively, set against a colorful futuristic backdrop. Inside is a splash image of the Mach 5 racing through Cosmopolis with the 4K and Blu- ray discs on the right side. It's a sleek image that could've used a character or two, but I'd imagine fans will like the aesthetic here. Also tucked inside the slipbox is a glossy white envelope housing several exclusive printed goodies including a softcover 32-page "World of Speed Racer" booklet with photos and facts about the film and franchise, 7 bound (Wachowski pun) art cards, and two folded double-sided theatrical poster replications.
The on-disc extras are identical to those found on the Region A 4K release and include several new-ish featurettes as well as most of the legacy content from the 2008 Blu-ray on both discs but, either way, one on-screen game included as a bonus DVD with the 2008 US Blu-ray edition has understandably not been ported over. All included bonus features are listed below in name only but are covered in more detail in the linked reviews.
DISC ONE: 4K UHD MOVIE DISC (Same as the Region A release linked above)
DISC TWO: BLU-RAY MOVIE DISC (Same as the 2008 UK Blu-ray)

As Michael J. Fox famously said in Back to the Future, "I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet... but your kids are gonna love it." The Wachowskis' Speed Racer may have been a critical and commercial failure back in 2008, but this action-packed family film's reputation has grown considerably since then and Warner Bros. has done right by bringing the film to UHD with a fantastic new Dolby Vision transfer, (finally) lossless 5.1 audio, a new Dolby Atmos remix, and even a new retrospective interview with the Wachowskis. Even so, Region A fans were short-changed with only regular and Steelbook options, but this Limited Collector's Edition Steelbook features deluxe packaging and is probably easier to get than the Region A Steelbook at this point. It also includes a Blu-ray copy of the film, which is unfortunately not based on the new transfer. Otherwise, it's a rock-solid release and comes Highly Recommended.
