South Park: The Complete Tenth Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Excelsior!

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 4, 2018

It's certainly a subjective claim, but season ten is South Park's best. Almost every episode is a classic in some form or fashion, beginning with a hilarious season opener in which Chef "returns" a changed man, speaking in recycled dialogue from past seasons. "Smug Alert" features one of the great South Park moments when Cartman dares to walk through left-wing haven San Francisco in a biohazard suit, tethered to Butters, to save his arch-enemy Kyle. The season introduces Al Gore and "ManBearPig," in which the Vice President is roundly mocked for his steadfast belief in something that doesn’t actually exist. "Make Love, Not Warcraft" sees the boys gain weight and pimples as they farm low-level creatures to gain massive experience points to battle an online bully. "Go God Go" features a hilarious send-up of Buck Rogers. The show is in top form throughout. It's relentlessly funny, endlessly re-watchable, and even a bit thought provoking along the way. It's not perfect, though; the Towlie episode is a bit bland and the evolution/Mrs. Garrison romance subplot in "Go God Go" is tedious, but this is otherwise the show at its very best.

The following episodes comprise season ten:

Disc One:

  • The Return of Chef: Chef left South Park to find meaning in life with the “Super Adventure Club.” The boys have been in a malaise since his departure, but he is back. However, the boys notice that something about him is…off. He falls under investigation for pedophillia.
  • Smug Alert!: Gerald Broflovski has recently purchased an eco-friendly hybrid car, and he’s keen on both showing it off and preaching environmental advocacy at the same time. Everyone around town is calling him “smug,” and even his children are turning on his new attitude. Gerlad announces that the family is moving to San Francisco to be around other like-minded people. Stan, dejected that his friend is leaving, vows to turn the town into a hybrid car utopia to lure the family back.
  • Cartoon Wars Parts I and II: Randy wakes the family, imploring them to flee. The entire town, in fact, takes refuge in the community center. The reason? A television cartoon, Family Guy, is set to air an image of the Prophet Muhammad, and everyone is expecting violent retaliation. The denizens survive the night, thanks to Fox, which censored the image at the last minute. The boys check it out on the DVR, which lands them in “Muslim Sensitivity Training” class. But when it’s announced that Fox is airing a followup episode that will depict the prophet, Cartman, of all people, leads a campaign to get the episode pulled.
  • A Million Little Fibers: Towlie is fired from a job at P.F. Chang's and, to make ends meet, turns to writing.
  • Manbearpig: Al Gore speaks to the students of South Park to warn them about the most dangerous thing in the world, "Manbearpig," which is a creature that is half man, half bear...and half pig.
  • Tsst: The school has “had it” with Cartman’s behavior, and Mr. Mackey believes his problems start at home. In response, Cartman’s mom breaks down, finally admitting that he’s a problem child. Cartman is a match for several TV nannies, but can he withstand the work of a celebrity dog trainer?

Disc Two:

  • Make Love, Not Warcraft: The boys are addicted to an MMORPG called World of Warcraft. Their play sessions are ruined by another player who is killing their characters, which should be against the game’s coding. He’s played the game so much that he can kill admins, and he is only growing stronger. In response and in an effort to rank up, the boys slay low-level boars by the millions in the only safe space in the game.
  • Mystery of the Urinal Deuce: Mr. Mackey launches an investigation to discover who pooped in the school urinal and calls in a pair of crack detectives, The Hardly Boys, to work the case. Meanwhile, Cartman sets out to prove true the conspiracy theories behind 9/11 and finds a familiar scapegoat.
  • Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy: Ike has an affair with his teacher. Cartman is appointed the school’s hall monitor and predictably becomes an authoritarian.
  • Hell on Earth 2006: Satan is planning on throwing a massive party on Halloween. The boys attempt to conjure the spirit of Biggie Smalls.
  • Go God Go and Go God Go XII: Cartman is desperate to get his hands on the still-unreleased Nintendo Wii video game console, so desperate that he asks to be placed in suspended animation for the three weeks leading up to the console’s launch. Unfortunately, he remains frozen for centuries and awakens in a future world populated by warring atheists. Meanwhile, Mrs. Garrison fights against a school mandate to teach evolution but discovers true love along the way.
  • Stanley's Cup: In order to pay county fines and get his bike back, Stan takes a job coaching youth hockey.

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season's 1080p Blu-ray presentation fares very well, though it is prone to showing more than a little shimmering artifacts and jagged lines along the way. Some obvious shimmering can be seen along the Super Adventure Club exteriors around the 7-minute mark of episode one. Some San Francisco house interiors around the 6-minute mark in episode two struggle with the same issue, and other places throughout the season and practically most scenes in "Tsst" are prone to producing the problem. Otherwise, this is typical South Park on Blu-ray excellence. Colors are bold, with all of the staple shades, and then some, pleasantly punchy and vibrant. Detailing is strong, revealing the show's textural core with ease.

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season features yet another high quality Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. The presentation is stable and satisfying. Music of all varieties delivers near faultless instrumental clarity, robust low end depth, and impeccable stage saturation. The track offers a number of satisfying surround moments, such as panicked din in the Family Guy episode, blustery winds in "Go God Go," and strong public address reverberation and crowd noise in the season finale. Action effects are clear and detailed. Dialogue is firmly positioned, detailed, and well prioritized throughout.

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season contains only the "mini commentaries" for each episode. Parker and Stone talk up the episodes in short-burst chunks.

South Park: The Complete Tenth Season Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

South Park never grows old, and season ten is the top-dog standout of twenty-plus years of excellence. Classic moments, great episodes, a perfect flow, endless laughs...this one has it all. South Park: The Complete Tenth Season delivers solid video and excellent lossless audio. Supplements again include the Parker/Stone commentary tracks. Very highly recommended, and for anyone wanting to give the show a try without starting at season one, this is the season to sample.
