South Park: The Complete Sixth Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman February 8, 2018

It’s been said before, but it’s truly amazing how South Park remains relevant, not only considering its current-run episodes but looking back on its older stories that are still resonating years later. Season six begins with an episode centered on Jared from Subway, who has recently been in the news for more than just losing weight. The season features episodes about discrimination and intolerance, directors tweaking movies (thankfully without adding twerking to classic favorites), and the general lack of fresh ideas in the entertainment landscape. There are even episodes about building walls discrimination against homosexuality. The season also deals in lighter fare, too, like an episode about the families going on a ski vacation and fighting the urge to buy a time share. Butters is a new central figure, replacing the permanently deceased Kenny, and this season introduces his super villain alter ego, Professor Chaos, who grows from the ashes of his quickly ended friendship with Cartman, Kyle, and Stan, who are looking for someone to take Kenny's place as their fourth.

The following episodes comprise season six.

Disc One:

  • Jared Has Aides: Subway's Jared is coming to South Park, and he reveals that he didn't lose weight simply by devouring sandwiches. His real secret: he has aides, as in a personal trainer and a nutritionist. The boys attempt to get in on the restaurant weight loss promotion business by fattening Butters and approaching City Wok for an advertising contract.
  • Asspen: Several families from South Park travel to Aspen for a quick getaway. The boys learn to ski while the parents are suckered into a time share scheme.
  • Freak Strike: The boys use Butters as an opportunity to get on the The Maury Povich Show. But things don't go entirely as planned, and Cartman must work his magic to salvage the experience.
  • Fun with Veal: The boys are horrified to learn where veal comes from and fight to save baby cows.
  • The New Terrance and Phillip Movie Trailer: Cartman, Butters, Kyle, and Stan are watching a Russell Crowe television show in order to see a trailer for a new Terrance and Phillip movie but are kicked out of the house and must scramble to find another way to see the trailer.
  • Professor Chaos: Cartman, Kyle, and Stan remove Butters from their group and seek out a new fourth friend. In retaliation, Butters creates a super villain alter ego.
  • Simpsons Already Did It: Butters cannot come up with an original super villain idea, while the boys accidentally kill one of the townsfolk.
  • Red Hot Catholic Love: Religion is in crisis in South Park following revelations concerning molestation in the Catholic Church.
  • Free Hat: The boys rally against the trend of filmmakers making unnecessary and politically correct changes to their movies.

Disc Two:

  • Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society: The boys must come back to school following a tragic event. In that brief time, Bebe got her boobs, and the boys take notice of them.
  • Child Abduction Is Not Funny: Dangers are everywhere in the world: school shootings, terrorism, and child abductions. It's the latter that's of concern to the parents of South Park, who decide to take drastic measures to protect the children from outsiders. But are outsiders the real threat?
  • A Ladder to Heaven: Cartman, Stan, and Kyle attempt to reach their deceased friend Kenny in Heaven because he holds a ticket stub that will allow them to collect a boatload of free candy.
  • The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers: The boys turn a simple journey with a videocassette into a Lord of the Rings-inspired bit of cosplay. But little do they know they have in their possession a pornographic film.
  • The Death Camp of Tolerance: Mr. Garrison is promoted to teach fourth grade, and with the school policy changing to be more accepting of people of his sexual preference, he can no longer be fired for being gay. And if he is, he will assuredly win a lawsuit for millions of dollars. He decides to go for the big bucks and brings Mr. Slave into the classroom in an effort to get fired, but the plan backfires when, rather than his firing, his antics lead to his class being sent to tolerance camp.
  • The Biggest Douche in the Universe: A possessed Cartman, his mom, Chef, Kyle, and Stan travel to New York to meet medium John Edward in an effort to free Kenny’s spirit from Cartman’s body, which is killing him.
  • My Future Self n' Me: Stan gets a frightening visit from his ghost of future self.
  • Red Sleigh Down: When Cartman learns that he's been so naughty that he'll actually owe Santa presents, he strives to be "nice" in order to get back on Santa's good side, but he is so far in the hole he'll have to do the nicest thing ever to get back in the black. That means bringing Christmas to children in Iraq. Meanwhile, a familiar face makes a return.

South Park: The Complete Sixth Season Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

South Park: The Complete Sixth Season stands amongst the best of the first six seasons in terms of image stability and firmness, only rarely exhibiting the aliasing and jagged edges that have plagued various other episodes and larger season swaths from seasons one through five. Certainly such artifacts remain, notably visible in Freak Strike and Red Sleigh Down but even therein rarely to an significant image detriment. Banding can be spotted in a few places, most prevalent in the Silence of the Lambs pit seen in "Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society." Otherwise, the image is typical of South Park on Blu-ray. Textural delights are revealed with ease, particularly the construction paper presentation of various surfaces. Image clarity is excellent. Colors are typically robust, presenting all of the classic series colors with the precision and intensity fans have come to expect of the series in 1080p.

South Park: The Complete Sixth Season Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

South Park: The Complete Sixth Season features the series-standard Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack, and its presentation is series-standard excellent. There's plenty of width and surround activity to enjoy in the opening theme song, boasting strong instrumental clarity, wide and deep stage engagement, and aggressive but balanced low end support. Much the same can be said of the alternate opening theme song heard at the start of the "Asspen" episode. Various South Park-styled action effects -- several crashes and such -- present with satisfying intensity and definition. Very strong dialogue reverberation may be heard as the situation warrants, such as when Jared addresses a crowd about eight minutes into episode one. PA announcements at an airport in episode three nicely filter through the stage. Basic dialogue is clear and detailed with consistently natural placement and seamless prioritization.

South Park: The Complete Sixth Season Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

South Park: The Complete Sixth Season contains only the "mini commentaries" for each episode. Parker and Stone talk up the episodes in short-burst chunks.

South Park: The Complete Sixth Season Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

This is another enjoyable season with sharp character moments, pointed social satire, and plenty of memorable episodes. South Park: The Complete Sixth Season's Blu-ray release offers amongst the most stable video of any of the first six seasons. Audio is typically excellent and Matt and Trey contribute their usual mini commentaries. Highly recommended.
