After dealing with the voyeurism impulse in “I Like to Watch,” co-writer/director Paul Vatelli is back with a more traditional adult film endeavor in 1983’s “Sorority Sweethearts.” The helmer heads to the American college campus to inspire carnal delights, containing the action to a sorority house where students and the housemother come into contact with sexual thrills as they try to reverse all disappointment previously tied to a weekend of cancelled plans.
While offered as a 2K scan of the 35mm original camera negative, "Sorority Sweethearts" has a little more difficulty with wear and tear during its AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation. Speckling is common throughout the viewing experience, and a sustained print damage is present in the second half of the feature. Clarity is terrific, with strong detail on skin surfaces and housing interiors, surveying decoration and additional sisters roaming the rooms. Costuming is fibrous, offering softer eveningwear and tight jeans and shirts during the school day. Facial particulars are defined. Outdoor distances are dimensional. Colors are nicely refreshed, delivering deep reds and purples on personal makeup, and clothing delivers strong period hues. De Leeuw's red hair pops, and full body skintones are natural. Greenery is exact. Delineation is comfortable. Grain is fine and film-like.
The 2.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix leads with dialogue exchanges, which aren't crisp but keep their dramatic integrity, handling all sorts of performance choices, while whispered seductions are easy to follow. Scoring cues are satisfactory, and the soundtrack selections offer a bit more musical power with disco beats.
There's no real humor or heart to "Sorority Sweethearts," but Vitelli keeps the feature lively with scenes of bedroom action, and he tries to offer something of an empowerment arc for Jean, which is as close to an ending as this slight but entertaining movie provides.
