Sorority Row 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Lionsgate Limited continues to mine the back catalog of Lionsgate (and in this instance Summit Entertainment), offering a new edition of this film in both 1080 and 4K with SteelBook packaging. Both new and ported over supplements are offered, and there's a new Atmos track on this release.

Sorority Row had 1080 release courtesy of Summit Entertainment way back in 2010, and Casey Broadwater's Sorority Row Blu-ray review offers plot information, a list of supplements on that release, and a reaction to the technical presentation.

Sorority Row is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate Films' Lionsgate Limited etailer with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 2.40:1. The release also includes an AVC encoded 1080p presentation in the same aspect ratio on a separate disc. Casey was reasonably well pleased with the look of the now pretty old 1080 SDR presentation from Summit, but a cursory comparison of screenshots between that review and this one (I've attempted to come close to replicating some of the same frames Casey captured for his review) show that once again color timing is noticeably different now, and to my eyes, anyway, improved. There's a kind of yellowish wash on the old Summit release that is absent here, and that materially aids some of the heavily graded or artificially lit sequences throughout the film, as well as offering an arguably more natural looking palette in "normal" moments. Both the kind of orange adjacent material in some of the opening moments is slightly warmer looking now even without the yellowish tint, and later material which often emphasizes teals or blues also has new vivacity, something that is especially observable in the 4K UHD's HDR / Dolby Vision grades. There are still some slight deficits in shadow detail even with HDR, and as Casey noted in his review, grain can be somewhat variable depending on lighting conditions.

As with several Lionsgate Limited "re-releases", this new edition has had a nice sonic upgrade courtesy of a Dolby Atmos track. There's some new if still intermittent engagement of the rear channels now, and some verticality (if not excessively) in both the obviously Psycho inspired score, as well as some of the sound effects accompanying the kill scenes in particular. There's some appealing directionality in the latter half of the film when the sorority "empties out" (one way or the other). Dialogue is presented without any problems. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.

Note: Both the 4K UHD and 1080 discs in this package sport the same slate of supplements. As has tended to be the case with many of the Lionsgate Limited releases of previously released material, some of the so-called Legacy Special Features don't look like they were included on the old 1080 disc from Summit. This comes packaged in an exclusive SteelBook that is rather nicely designed, with the front and rear panels bathed in a kind of orange-red tone, with various faces, or at least sections of faces, of some of the characters adorning both panels. A close-up of a weapon, Theta Pi's Greek lettering and an ominous message are also included. The interior panels offer a depiction of a phone which plays a salient part in the narrative. A Mylar O- ring outlines the aforementioned weapon while offering one of the film's more iconic images of the cast under perilous conditions. A digital copy is also included.

Sorority Row 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

As Casey mentioned in his original review, there's an undeniable "paint by numbers" aspect to this film, despite the repeated assertions in some of the supplements that Sorority Row was ostensibly meant to be a mashup of Scream and Mean Girls. This new edition from Lionsgate Limited offers improved video and audio, as well as both returning and new supplements, all in a nicely designed SteelBook, for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
