A worthwhile classic starring Deanna Durbin.

Something in the Wind is a charming gem produced by Joseph Sistrom (Incendiary Blonde, The Atomic City). Based on the story by Fritz Rotter and Charles O'Neal, Something in the Wind is a fun romantic-comedy classic. A must-see Deanna Durbin classic.

Donald Read (John Dall) is the son a recently deceased millionaire. Donald decides he should meet radio singer Mary Collins (Deanna Durbin) in the belief she was the mistress for his father. Donald attempts to offer Mary a settlement from the inheritance. Angered by his assumptions, Mary demands to receive a million dollars. Comedy and drama ensues.

Deanna Durbin is a delightful actress with an incredible range: one of the best from the golden-era of Hollywood. The performance in Something in the Wind showcases the inherent charms of Durbin in spades. Durbin is a gorgeous, fun, and suave actress. Something in the Wind provides her with many opportunities to shine.

There are a number of impressive production elements on display in Something in the Wind. The art direction by Alexander Golitzen (Foreign Correspondent, Airport) and Frank A. Richards (Buck Privates Come Home, The Vigilantes Return) helps the filmmaking aesthetic flourish. A great production backdrop, the art direction showcases a nice visual range.

The costumes by Orry-Kelly (The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca) adds a splash of creativity to the filmmaking. Deanna Durbin looks the most impressive of all: radiating beauty in the role. The remarkable costuming giving Durbin a distinctive look unique from most of her film roles.

Time for some magic.

The cinematography by Milton R. Krasner (The Seven Year Itch, An Affair to Remember) is remarkable. Beautiful and bold. The black-and-white visuals imbuing the filmmaking with an organic style that is evocative and mesmerizing.

The music score composed by Johnny Green (The Great Caruso, It Happened in Brooklyn) adds some charm to the production. The songs are entertaining as well. The music backdrop fits the tone of the filmmaking well.

The screenplay by Harry Kurnitz (Witness for the Prosecution, A Shot in the Dark) and William Bowers (The Sheepman, The Gunfighter) is enormously thrilling. Something in the Windhas a script that is charming. The story has some fun twists and turns. The characters are well written.

Directed by Irving Pichel (The Most Dangerous Game, The Miracle of the Bells), Something in the Wind is wonderful entertainment. Something in the Wind has plenty of imagination and the filmmaking is creative. Pichel made a fun movie and it does a great job highlighting Deanna Durbin.

Something in the Wind Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Arriving on Blu-ray from Universal, Something in the Wind is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. The release is generally impressive and the scan looks decent throughout. However, the print does have window-boxed opening title cards and there are occasional specks of dirt and minor scratches to the print – nothing too severe (but it is worth noting the presentation is not pristine).

The release is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono. The audio sounds good but it is not as impressive as some of the other Deanna Durbin Universal titles released on Blu-ray. The quality is a little inconsistent and there is hiss in the background. Dialogue reproduction is clear but the audio isn't entirely pristine and could have used more restoration work.
