Brian De Palma's "Snake Eyes" (1998) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber. The supplemental features on the release include new audio commentary by critics Steve Mitchell and Nathaniel Thompson and vintage trailer. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

You went down, champ.

Kino Lorber's release of Snake Eyes is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked".
Please note that some of the screencaptures included with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p. Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc, including the actual color values of this content.

The release introduces a new 4K makeover of Snake Eyes sourced from the original camera negative, finalized at Paramount Pictures. In native 4K, the 4K makeover can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with HDR and later spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray.
The 4K makeover is a jaw-dropper. It exceeded all of my expectations, which were quite a few. I have an older Blu-ray release of Snake Eyes which is pretty decent, so I was hoping to see some meaningful upgrades. Instead, what I saw on my system were tremendous upgrades, and in all major areas that we scrutinize in our reviews, too. For example, delineation, clarity, and especially depth are dramatically improved throughout the entire film. I would like to underscore this crucial point -- the upgrade in quality is across the board, not in select sequences. However, what impressed me the most was the outstanding color grading job. It is as perfect as I hoped it can be, so all primaries and all supporting nuances look outstanding and easily create astonishing 4K visuals. I ran a few quick tests with the previous Blu-ray release, and the difference in quality is staggering, similar to what you would get if you compare an older DVD release and a newer Blu-ray release. Also, the same difference can be observed if you compare the previous Blu-ray release with the new Blu-ray release. Fluidity is greatly improved as well. The entire film looks immaculate. All in all, after it was redone in 4K, Snake Eyes looks sensational on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray, so if it is one of your favorite films, do not hesitate to upgrade.

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature. When turned on, they appear inside the image frame.
I viewed the entire film with the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. I think that it is outstanding. Snake Eyes has a lot of dynamic material, with plenty of excellent sound effects and surround movement that the 5.1 track handles with great authority. It probably helps that virtually the entire film takes place inside the big venue, but I think that 5.1 track is mastered really well and is an all-around winner.

4K BLU-RAY DISC

The new 4K makeover of Brian De Palma's Snake Eyes is a jaw-dropper. The party at Paramount that prepared it did everything right, so now the film looks incredible on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray. I wanted the 4K makeover to be a nice upgrade in quality, but what I saw on my system exceeded all expectations I had, and there were quite a few. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
