Smut Without Smut: Satanic Horror Nite Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf December 25, 2021

Recently, AFGA celebrated the drive-in experience with “Blood-A-Rama: Triple Frightmare,” and now they turn their attention to a similar viewing event, only this time they focus on the highlights of satan-themed adult film shorts. “Smut Without Smut: Satanic Horror Nite” is a strange offering of a “feature-length mixtape,” combining softcore scenes from three shorts, along with additional promotional footage, ending up with a smorgasbord of visuals with plots concerning black magic and sexual slavery. Why the company is doing this isn’t immediately clear, but they commit to the offering, stitching together a wild ride of old footage, which will likely be of some appeal to exhibition enthusiasts and those interested in the development of erotic entertainment from the 1970s.

The Shorts

“Smut Without Smut: Satanic Horror Nite” (75:28) is an AFGA “mixtape” that presents drive-in commercials and snipes, with the main “feature” being edited versions of the erotic shorts, removing hardcore imagery.

“Sacrilege” (55:58) involves a lazy afternoon with Jay, who’s out in the open world reading a book on witchcraft. He’s approached by Cassandra, who’s also interested in the wonders of Hell, inviting the young man back to her home, where he’s quickly put under a spell, turned into a sex slave. It’s a situation of satanic submission that soon involves Jay’s girlfriend, Maria.

“The Devil Inside Her” (65:44) is set in New England, 1826, with young Faith eager to be married to Joseph, only he shows hesitation with her enthusiasm. Hope is Faith’s sister, and she wants to claim Joseph for herself, encourage the presence of evil to satisfy her lust. Such activity unleashes a demon in the woods, which inhabits pure bodies, turning them into sexual beasts.

“Satan’s Lust” (67:08) involves the mysterious disappearance of a young woman, with her college friends, Pamela and Wayne, teaming up to figure out what happened. Trying to avoid such criminal exposure, three Satanists attempt to take possession of the detectives, using their black magic to transform Pamela and Wayne into sexual slaves.

The shorts on the "Smut Without Smut" disc are offered with AVC encoded image (1.33:1 aspect ratio) presentations. With a thorough restoration of the materials perhaps impossible, AFGA goes the as-is route, with the shorts displaying substantial wear and tear, including thick scratches, jumpy and missing frames, chemical blotches, and significant fade. Detail reaches about as far as possible under these conditions, providing a softer view of body parts and interiors. A general appreciation of skin surfaces and body hair is there, but nothing too precise. Colors are largely gone on the shorts, left reddish, but the "Smut Without Smut" collection delivers bright primaries on lively commercials and snipes, looking better than the shorts.

The 1.0 DTS-HD MA mixes for the shorts (2.0 DTS-HD MA for "Smut Without Smut") struggle with clarity, making some dialogue exchanges unintelligible (subtitles aren't offered on the shorts, just "Satanic Horror Nite"). Age is obvious and damage is present. Music isn't clear, but a general sense of muzak is present.

The shorts aren't professional productions, showcasing only a basic understanding of filmmaking essentials and thespian talent (true period details aren't pursued in "The Devil Inside Her"). The creative goal of the offerings is to get the actors out of their clothes as fast as possible, but there's an attempt to generate a spooky mood with evil characters and intentions, adding a layer of uneasy darkness to the material, limiting already niche erotica. Still, the taboo atmosphere of the disc is enjoyable with lowered expectations, examining occasional directorial ambition and passes at artful interpretations of mind control and seduction. There's goofiness as well. AFGA throws a cinematic party with "Smut Without Smut: Satanic Horror Nite," working to present these shorts as something for amusement, but also preserving the original viewing experiences to the best of their ability.
