Slip Into Silk Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf October 8, 2023

Shenanigans are afoot in 1985’s “Slip Into Silk,” which begins with seductive activities at a radio station and graduates to more of a blackmail plot, bringing some structure to this collection of adult cinema highlights. The story isn’t advanced, but the production is clearly having a little fun with this endeavor, with plenty of screen time devoted to the actors and their special way of working through scenes. “Slip Into Silk” gets a little peculiar at times, especially when director R. Michael Stringer goes random and permissive with his editing, but it’s an entertaining sit, presenting just enough silliness to charm and plenty of heated encounters.

Silk (Kelly Nichols) is the most popular on-air personality at WLAY FM radio, maintaining a loyal fan base with her sensual ways. She’s supported by Charlie (Tom Byron), her engineer, and office executive Mike (Eric Edwards) is her lover, but the owner of the station, Harry (Jamie Gillis), is looking to replace her. Harry’s having sex with Sylvia (Janey Robbins), offering the dim-bulb a shot at radio glory as a reward, preparing to ditch Silk and carry on with his mistress. Catching word of the situation, secretary Laura (Laurie Smith) joins Charlie in a plan to videotape one of Harry and Sylvia’s office trysts, planning to blackmail them and save Silk’s job.

WLAY FM is home to smooth sounds and an even smoother host, with Silk dominating the airwaves with her sultry voice and sensual mood. It’s a real wonder why anyone would even think about replacing her, but Harry isn’t exactly retaining clarity of thought, with his free time filled with Evelyn encounters. The potential new on-air personality is an airhead, with her lack of intelligence and wit basically ignored by Harry, who’s more interested in playing submission/domination games with the (hopefully) willing woman (a Gillis specialty). “Slip Into Silk” eventually sets up a plan of attack against Harry, but there are multiple scenes of intimacy before a plot comes into play, with Silk taking a moment with Mike in the studio. Laura also has her way with Charlie, establishing lines of loyalty as the foursome learn of Harry’s plan to dismiss Silk.

“Slip Into Silk” does feel a little too random at times. It’s an adult film of course, but the production looks to squeeze in as much carnal activity as possible, which is a good thing, but part of this journey involves time with two listeners in a running shower enjoying themselves while trying not to drown. Editing often breaks up sequences, but bluntly so, limiting the flow of the sexual odyssey.

Slip Into Silk Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

The AVC encoded image (1.33:1 aspect ratio) is sourced from a 2K scan of the 16mm interpositive. Colors are most exciting here, with bright blues in radio station interiors, and red makeup distinct. Style also brings out bold primaries. Skin tones are natural. Detail is good, with a nice sense of skin particulars on the performers, and costuming is fibrous. Interiors retain a sense of decoration and equipment in the station. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is nicely resolved. Source is in fine condition, with some wear.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA track offers a simple understanding of dialogue exchanges, with performance choices appreciable, along with sexual response. Scoring supports with clarity, adding jazzy moods.

Slip Into Silk Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Plans to ruin Harry emerge in the second half of "Slip Into Silk," which includes a hidden camera and a debut screening at some type of advertiser shindig, with the details of it all left to the imagination. All the viewer needs to see is a bunch of older men in suits outraged by such activity they'd love to participate in, which is about as far as the storytelling gets here. The rest of "Slip Into Silk" is devoted to the actors and their semi-improvisational ways, generating some unpredictability to the amusing endeavor.
