Skyfall 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 29, 2020

MGM and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the 2012 James Bond film 'Skyfall.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Skyfall 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

The glossy, slick, smooth, fingerprint attracting front SteelBook panel depicts James Bond, center, from the hips to the head, facing froward. He's in full formal attire. He's holding his trademark Walther handgun in his right hand, positioned across his torso. His left hand is in his pants pocket. The film's title runs across his chest, center, with the 007 logo below. It's dark grey at the edges and lightens towards the middle. Behind him is a dark teal-colored background that grows a little lighter towards center. The rear panel simply features the same background color and small studio and legalese text at the bottom. The spine is a dark teal color with the film's title center. MGM and 007 logos are above. Nothing is below.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is very minimalist, offering what amounts to a blank, dark slate with large metallic teal colored "007" text at the bottom, only the top half or so of which is visible. There is a bit missing from the sides, too. It's essentially identical to the 2016 Blu-ray SteelBook; the only real difference is that the older SteelBook employs more of a flat color while this newer edition sports that metallic look.

Skyfall 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

MGM has gone minimalist with the Bond 4K SteelBooks. They look good and get the job done, highlighting the main character and little more. They are elegant if not a bit boring, uncluttered, and should please fans. The 4K content is excellent, too. Highly recommended.
