Shutter Island 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

A must-own 4K

Shutter Island is an outstanding cinematic achievement from master filmmaker Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, Kundun). Based on the acclaimed novel by Dennis Lehane, the script is by Laeta Kalogridis (Alita: Battle Angel, Terminator Genisys). A mysterious, suspenseful, and thrilling experience awaits. A must-see in 4K (and a film which greatly benefits from the enhanced resolution and high-dynamic-range).

Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a U.S. Marshal in charge of investigating the disappearance of a murderer confined to an asylum for the insane. Arriving at the mysterious island with more than his fair share of doubts behind the disappearance of the patient, Teddy is joined by Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) for his investigation. The duo meet the leader of the asylum, Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) and things slowly come in to focus. Can Teddy solve the mystery behind the missing patient?

Featuring evocative cinematography by Robert Richardson (Kill Bill Vol. 1, The Aviator) and perfect editing by Thelma Schoonmaker (The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street), Shutter Island creates a dream-like experience out of the production. Not only is the production design by the great Dante Ferretti (The Age of Innocence, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) brilliant, it is truly hypnotic.

Scorsese crafted an outstanding thriller with Shutter Island. Not only does he bring forth exceptional performances from his A-List cadt, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley, Scorsese delivers a film imbued with brilliant visuals at every turn of the story. A must-see film that appears even more dynamic in 4K.

Shutter Island is a magnificent film from the great Martin Scorsese. The production is impeccable on so many levels. The performances are electrifying. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers one of his greatest performances. The 4K UHD is top-notch in every regard. The transfer is absolutely mind- blowing (and looks even better than it did in the cinema). A must-own disc.
