Overview

Shrek 4K (2001)

Once upon a time, in a faraway swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad. Determined to save their home (not to mention his own), Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona to be Farquaad's bride, with the help of a wisecracking donkey. Rescuing the Princess may be small compared to her deep, dark secret.

Shrek 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 15, 2021

Universal has distributed a UHD SteelBook release for the smash hit franchise starting 2001 digitally animated film 'Shrek.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Shrek 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

Shrek's 4K SteelBook features glossy-smooth front and rear panels. The front panel simply depicts Shrek and Donkey from an angled top-down perspective. Both are looking up towards the camera. Shrek is standing in front and Donkey has his front hooves on Shrek's left shoulder. Both have silly grins on their faces. They stand in front of a solid white background but do cast a very slight gray shadow. The film's title appears top left in green, accompanied by a DreamWorks logo above and the words "20th Anniversary Edition" below. The rear panel features a crude wooden sign depicting a simplistic drawing of an ogre center. With it are, in red, the words "Beware! Ogre." The background is white. Across the bottom in fine black print are DreamWorks and Universal logos, some legalese, and a model number. The spine is white with the film's title, and all the accompanying information from the front, center. A DreamWorks logo has been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code floats; there are no left side tabs. One disc sits on its own hub on the left while two others share the right, each on their own hub in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that depicts Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona walking past a windmill on the left while Farquaad's tower appears in the distance on the right.

Shrek 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Fun SteelBook! The front image is a little ehhh but does capture the spirit of the film in several ways. The rear panel is simple yet fun and the inner print is more of a beautiful piece of art. The film is terrific, as is the UHD. Highly recommended.
