She Killed in Ecstasy 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov April 20, 2026

Jess Franco's "She Killed in Ecstasy" (1971) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Severin Films. The supplemental features on the release include archival program with Jess Franco; recent program with author and critic Stephen Thrower; archival program with actor Paul Muller; restored German trailer for the film; and more. In German, with optional English subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

Mrs. Johnson

Soledad Miranda is Mrs. Johnson, the young and beautiful wife of an ambitious doctor (Fred Williams, Juliet of the Spirits) who has become a target for the medical community after performing various inhumane experiments. When the depressed doctor commits suicide, Mrs. Johnson decides to punish his most outspoken critics.

Jess Franco completed She Killed in Ecstasy immediately after the stylish thriller Vampyros Lesbos. Apparently, German producer Artur Brauner was so impressed by the latter that he instantly gave Franco carte blanche to direct any film he wanted as long as Miranda was once again its star.

She Killed in Ecstasy was inspired by a famous play penned by French writer Gabriel Marcel. However, its plot is very similar to that of Franco’s The Diabolical Dr. Z in which a woman decides to avenge the death of her father, a mad scientist. The major difference between the two films is the mise-en-scčne. The latter has a neo-Gothic atmosphere that reminds of Georges Franju’s terrific horror thriller Eyes Without a Face, while the former is set in the present (the early 1970s).

Miranda is the heart and soul of She Killed in Ecstasy. After the death of her husband, she becomes a dangerous seductress who tracks down his critics and then makes them suffer. Some of the killings are quite gruesome -- with the best one featuring Franco himself -- but the camera always seems far more interested in Miranda’s elegant body and facial expressions. Unsurprisingly, She Killed in Ecstasy is as much of a revenge thriller as it is an exotic erotic film celebrating Miranda’s beauty.

Despite using a number of the same actors, She Killed in Ecstasy is not as effective as Vampyros Lesbos. The dreamy environment that makes the latter so fascinating to behold is replaced by a more conventional Euro-trash environment, causing many of the improvised sequences in the former to look quite uneven. Even the erotic sequences do not work as well as those seen in Vampyros Lesbos.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the soundtrack features additional jazzy tracks by Manfred Hubler and Sigi Schwab. However, this time the music is smoother and significantly more relaxed. Also, the placement of the jazzy tracks is not as precise as those heard throughout Vampyros Lesbos.

Franco shot She Killed in Ecstasy with cinematographer Manuel Merino (99 Women, Justine de Sade) in Calpe, Alicante, Comunidad Valenciana, a beautiful area with some terrific beaches. The interior footage was shot in a truly spectacular villa built by the prominent Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill.

Like Vampyros Lesbos, She Killed in Ecstasy was dubbed in German. The German version, preferred by Franco, was recently restored 4K and is presented on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray in this combo pack release, produced by Severin Films. In an archival program, Franco confirms that it was banned in his native Spain.

She Killed in Ecstasy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Severin Films' release of SheKilled in Ecstasy is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray and the Blu-ray are both Region-Free.

Please note that some of the screencaptures included with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p. Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc.

Screencaptures #1-27 are taken from the Blu-ray.
Screencaptures #30-38 are taken from the 4K Blu-ray.

In America, She Killed in Ecstasy made its high-definition debut with this release, also produced by Severin Films, in 2015. The combo pack presents an exclusive new 4K restoration of the German version of She Killed in Ecstasy, sourced from the original camera negative, on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray. In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with Dolby Vision and later spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray.

In 2015, She Killed in Ecstasy looked better than Vampyros Lesbos on Blu-ray. It was primarily because the prominent filtering adjustments present in the older presentation of the latter were dramatically minimized. However, traces of these filtering adjustments were still noticeable, and in different areas of the film, usually with unique ranges of darker nuances, most were noticeable. The new 4K restoration produces healthier and more attractive visuals, all boasting an undeniable, significantly stronger organic appearance. On my system, the upgrade in quality was so obvious that I did not feel the need to compare various areas that used to reveal issues. Delineation, clarity, and depth are far better now. Grain exposure can be somewhat uneven at times, but these fluctuations are introduced by lensing preferences. Color reproduction and balance are very good. As with the new 4K restoration of Vampyros Lesbos, color saturation is improved, and there are various small yet very good adjustments. For example, in numerous backgrounds, primary blue and blue nuances are strengthened, and the light turquoise that used to interfere with them is eliminated. This particular adjustment has quite a positive impact on the overall dynamic range of many visuals. The improvement is very easy to appreciate in native 4K and 1080p, too. Also, I thought that darker nuances are better managed than those on the new 4K restoration of Vampyros Lesbos. I would describe the Dolby Vision grade as very good. There are no stability issues. Finally, I saw a couple of tiny blemishes, but the entire film looks very healthy. My score is 4.75/5.00.

She Killed in Ecstasy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

There is only one standard audio track on this release: German DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English subtitles are provided for the main feature.

Jess Franco preferred the German versions of She Killed in Ecstasy and Vampyros Lesbos. However, I suspect that both films would have been more effective had they been shot and finalized in English. The German dubbing is all over the place. Some of it is uneven, and some of it is somewhat amateurish. Franco's films easily tolerate such inconsistencies, but in She Killed in Ecstasy they make it difficult to create and maintain a great atmosphere. The lossless track sounds marginally fuller to me now, but I am unsure if any new and specific work has been done to optimize it. The English translantion is very good.

She Killed in Ecstasy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Jess Franco completed She Killed in Ecstasy using many of the same actors that appeared in Vampyros Lesbos. However, She Killed in Ecstasy does not have the same dreamy environment that makes Vampyros Lesbos so fascinating to behold. Still, fans of Soledad Miranda probably should not miss it, especially now, after it was beautifully restored in 4K by Severin Films. I think that the new 4K restoration looks gorgeous on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
