She Done Him Wrong is a worthwhile comedy-drama with a historical bent. The feature-film is produced by William LeBaron (The Very Idea, The General Died at Dawn). With a must-see performance by Mae West, fans of classic comedies won't want to miss it.
Lady Lou (Mae West) is a night club singer exploring music and stardom in the 1890s. As Lou's success explodes, she finds herself with many eligible bachelor suitors interested in her hand: including the witty Captain Cummings (Cary Grant). Even as Lou resists swarms of gifts from the suitors, her heart must decide who to love. Will Lady Lou find her soulmate?
The heart of the film resides in the wonderful performances. Mae West and Cary Grant are both exceptional in the film. West carries herself well and provides a bravado performance with an outstanding level of charm. Grant is similarly outstanding and full of classical wit and charm.
The production has a number of impressive merits. The art direction by Robert Usher (No Time for Love, Hold Back the Dawn) shines and helps to tell the story. The sets and production design elements are top-notch and fit the filmmaking well. There are many great elements at play here: a terrific effort through-and-through. Another wonderful component resides in the creative costumes designed by Edith Head (The Sting, Roman Holiday). The costumes showcase Mae West quite well.
The incredible Mae West.
The music composed by John Leipold (The Big Wheel, Two Yanks in Trinidad) added to the production merits as well. The score provides the film with a sense of wonder that adds an element of charm that fits the material. The music ebbs and flows well with the visual component of the filmmaking.
The cinematography by Charles Lang (Charade, Some Like It Hot) is stunning. The black-and-white cinematographic element provides the filmmaking with a sense of style that is impossible to ignore. The visuals soar and the film plays all the better for it.
The screenplay by Mae West (My Little Chickadee, Klondike Annie), Harvey F. Thew (Love in the Desert, Song of the West), and John Bright (The Kid from Cleveland, The Public Enemy) is one of the greatest components of She Done Him Wrong. The script is one of the strongest of the Mae West classics and there is a lot of charming elements to the story. The characters were well developed throughout and the dialogue was exceptional as well.
Directed by Lowell Sherman (The Royal Bed, Bachelor Apartment), She Done Him Wrong is an altogether entertaining classic that has withstood the test of time. The production merits are superb and the filmmaking excels on a number of levels. Edited by Alexander Hall (The Great Lover, Here Comes Mr. Jordan), She Done Him Wrong is a cinematic delight that Mae West and Cary Grant fans won't want to miss.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber, She Done Him Wrong is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. The Blu-ray release is impressive and manages to preserve the presentation of the film well. The encode is effective throughout and there were no significant issues with print wear or damage. Black levels were reasonable and the black-and-white cinematography shines.
The release is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio mono. The lossless audio on the release is top-notch and sounds clear throughout the presentation. Dialogue is crisp and clear (and well-defined) throughout. The sound-quality on She Done Him Wrong never struggles to preserve the soundtrack. There were no egregious issues to report in regards to hiss, crackle, warps, pops, or clicks. A satisfying audio mix.
Optional English subtitles are provided.
