Meet the fabulously dysfunctional Gallagher family. Dad's a drunk, Mom split long ago, eldest daughter Fiona tries to hold the family together. Eldest son Philip (Lip) trades his physics tutoring skills for sexual favors from neighborhood girls. Middle son Ian is gay. Youngest daughter Debbie is stealing money from her UNICEF collection. Ten-year-old Carl is a budding sociopath and an arsonist, and toddler Liam is - well, he might actually be black, but nobody has a clue how.

Note: Evidently based at least in part on complaints from Blu-ray consumers who wanted a "complete collection" of Shameless,
Warner Brothers is finally releasing both this season and Shameless: The Eleventh and Final Season in standalone sets as well as part of Shameless: The Complete Series. This review is based on the
discs included in The Complete Series set which are presumably the same as those offered in the standalone releases of individual
seasons.
When did families on television become almost unapologetically reprehensible? That very quality is alluded to none too subtly in the very title of
this long running series, but when assessing the Gallagher clan, it may be salient to document the slow but steady rise of "bad behavior" in various
small screen kin. Relatively early television families like those shown on Father Knows Best, Leave It to Beaver
and The Donna Reed Show almost invariably portrayed upright,
honorable folks whose kids sometimes went momentarily astray, but where a secure and steady moral compass tended to ineluctably
guide things. It might be argued with the advent of The Addams
Family and The Munsters things went a bit haywire in at least
some ways, but it might not be until the advent of All in the Family,
and then later
"fellow" abrasive comedy Married with Children along with
interstitial dramas like Dallas and Dynasty, that there were overtly misbehaving adults on display (in abundance in some cases). All bets were
ultimately off with the arrival of more prevalent cable fare, and everything from The Sopranos to Game of Thrones to Succession to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to The Bear
certainly portrayed often out of control family dynamics (and it's interesting to note how these depictions can span everything from epic
historical drama to more contemporary sitcom adjacent ambiences). Which brings us to the, yep, (partially?) reprehensible Gallaghers.

Shameless: The Complete Tenth Season is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Warner Brothers Home Entertainment with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. This continues the series' always competent if never really amazing high definition presentations. This season has a perhaps unusually large (even for this series in general) amount of "jiggly cam", and that can make detail levels have at least the perception of variability, since the image is darting to and fro so much (it actually made getting relatively decent screenshots a bit of a challenge at times). The palette is very nicely suffused, especially in the outdoor material, but there's at least a hint of the same yellowish quality in some of the interior material, notably the Gallagher house itself. Close-ups can offer really substantial fine detail on weathered faces (we're looking at you, Mr. Macy) in particular.

Shameless: The Complete Tenth Season features another nicely immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track like the previous seasons' Blu-ray releases, and in fact this season has some of the better uses of source cues and ambient environmental effects which help to regularly engage the side and rear channels. The show is of course predominantly dialogue driven, and so surround activity is definitely variable. All spoken material is delivered cleanly and clearly. Optional English subtitles are available.

Disc One

Maybe others who have endured the slings and arrows of the outrageous Gallaghers for years may understand what I mean when I say it was actually probably a good thing that there was a multiyear break between me having to binge the ninth season and then this season in preparation for writing reviews. The Gallaghers and the extended characters in Shameless may well be prime examples of folks best in smaller and potentially discrete doses. There are some great moments for just about all of the major characters here, and longtime fans should find sufficient content to propel them through to the series' final season. Technical merits are generally solid, and even without much in the way of supplements, Shameless: The Complete Tenth Season comes Recommended.
