SexWorld 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf March 12, 2021

Futurists promised a tomorrow with flying cars, food in pill form, and colonies on the moon. Instead, we now have adult entertainment in 4K. Continuing their efforts to bring more titles to UHD, Vinegar Syndrome returns to one of their biggest adult titles, “SexWorld,” giving it an upgraded viewing experience after its initial, successful release in 2015.

Instead of simply lampooning the 1973 hit “Westworld,” 1978’s “SexWorld” attempts to use the unforgettable premise to inspire a surprisingly sophisticated adult movie. Director Anthony Spinelli imagines a getaway where anything goes sexually, with paying guests using this rare, non- judgmental opportunity to work out kinks, repair marriages, and delay loneliness. Fantasies reign at the compound, finding the helmer working overtime to create a stylish feature that respects the delicacy of confession, embracing an inviting sense of individual release to go with the hardcore routine.

With a few extra bucks allotted to the production, “SexWorld” provides a semi-complete visual experience, offering colorful sets and unusual locations to match vivid bedroom antics. Spinelli also experiments with editing and abstraction, looking to slip into the psychological playground provided by these hesitant characters, assisting competent performances (from the likes of Kay Parker, John Leslie, and Annette Haven) with a cinematic reach, providing more bang for the buck while still allowing for plenty of bang. Fantasy sequences are intimate, some played for uneasy laughs (Leslie plays a racist confronted with an aggressive black lover), while others head into darker areas of the mind to unleash pure desire that’s been bottled up for far too long.

While it’s filled with lustful encounters that satisfy the demands of adult cinema, “SexWorld” displays a genuine drive to be something more than the average raincoat experience. It’s genuinely evocative and weirdly sincere, supplying a rare feeling of depth and directorial ambition in a genre that often favors the bare minimum of effort.

The initial Blu-ray release of "Sex World" was impressive, bringing the feature to HD with care and definition, rivaling a theatrical presentation. With the UHD release, there's simply no other way to watch the movie, with Vinegar Syndrome offering a bright and appealing viewing experience that delivers exquisite clarity. Sharpness is strong, and while it's not a huge leap from the Blu-ray, the UHD is more compelling when it comes to skin surfaces, which explore the natural appearance of the actors, including fine hairs, blemishes, and age. Costuming is precise, with silky outfits and polyester gear. Sets are dimensional, capturing open spaces and more intimate settings, finding decoration open for inspection. Colors are gorgeous, amplifying the production's use of primary hues to generate an exaggerated sci-fi look. Reds, blues, and yellows are hearty throughout, and skintones are natural, with more inviting pinkness than the Blu-ray presentation. Whites are ideally balanced, and highlights are tasteful. Delineation is exact. Grain is satisfactorily resolved, improving on the previous release. Some mild speckling and scratches are detected, along with a few brief discolorations.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix provides a clear listening event for "SexWorld," offering clean dialogue exchanges as performances explore direct confrontations and hushed reflection. Scoring cues are supportive with satisfactory instrumentation, and soundtrack additions add some percussive snap to the track. Sound effects and ADR are distinct, ranging from computer bleeps and bloops to more direct examples of human sexual response.

SexWorld 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

While some may believe adult cinema in 4K is perhaps offering a much too intimate viewing experience, "SexWorld" is a smart choice to launch this type of UHD offering, with the production committed to providing a strong visual punch to accompany the sexual routine, giving Vinegar Syndrome something to work with as they deliver a disc that easily bests any theatrical experience.
