Captain Malcolm Reynolds, is a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -- squabbling, insubordinate and undying loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers -- a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister -- he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself.

After the television series 'Firefly' was unceremoniously cancelled after a mere 11 episodes aired during its original broadcast run, the fan-favorite would finally receive something of a proper send-off with the 2005 film 'Serenity' which is being re-released in this 20th Anniversary Limited Edition 4K UHD SteelBook courtesy of Universal. The entire crew of the Serenity returns for the adventure and includes Nathan Fillon ('Castle'), Gina Torres ('Suits'), Jewel Staite ('Family Law'), Alan Tudyk ('Resident Alien'), Adam Baldwin ('Chuck'), Summer Glau ('Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles'), and Maria Baccarin ('Gotham'). The included 4K disc appears to be identical to the previous 4K release, and the included Blu-ray disc is the same as the disc originally released in 2008. A Digital Code redeemable through Movies Anywhere is also included. Please scroll down to the 'Special Features and Extras' section below for a discussion of the newest SteelBook.

The cover of the latest Serenity 4K 20th Anniversary Limited Edition SteelBook contains a front image that is dominated by Summer Glau's River. She's well-armed, and appears to be ready for a fight. Her kneeling figure is floating in front of a planet, with the crew's ship flying toward the viewer. A purplish nebula is positioned behind the planet, and the film's title sits near the top of the image, surrounded by the blackness of space and a few stars. The spine sports the film's title in the same font in a field of black, with Universal's logo at the bottom. The reverse image captures the Serenity as it either taking off or landing at a rocky patch of land, with stars and purple cosmic clouds filling the skies above it. Universal's logo is centered at the bottom and product number is found in the bottom right corner. When opening SteelBook, the Digital Code resides under the two tabs on the left side. On the right side, the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray disc are stagger-stacked, each on its own hub, with the 4K UHD disc on top. Removing the discs reveals a still from the film of Fillon's Mal confronting five members of his crew during a particularly tense moment. The SteelBook has the preferred matte finish which resists fingerprints associated with normal handling very well. The cover image is colorful, it makes sense to spotlight Glau's River as she is one of the show's most dangerous, and enigmatic characters who factors heavily into the story here, and it looks quite nice in-hand.

Cancelled before its time, Serenity is a solid curtain-closer to the series Firefly. Those who are new to the IP don't face a Herculean task in catching up on the crew's adventures as the original series and the film could be consumed in a day. While the release doesn't feature an updated audio or video presentation, the latter being more of a priority than the former, it's an attractive SteelBook that collectors and those who have yet to add a copy of the film to their libraries should consider. Recommended.
