A top-notch slice-of-life anime

Senryu Girl is a decidedly entertaining anime with plenty of charm for audiences of all ages. Based on the original manga by creator Masakuni Igarashi, Senryu Girl is produced by Hiroo Maruyama (My Hero Academia, Arakawa Under the Bridge). The program has a sweet heart. Featuring a romantic storyline and compelling characters, Senryu Girl is a delightful anime gem that is well worth discovery.

Nanako Yukishiro (Yukishiro Nanako) is a shy young girl who doesn't communicate with words alone: she writes senryu poetry and writes her words down for others to see. As a member of the school literary club, Nanako meets the bumbling Eiji Busujima (Busujima Eiji). Unlike Nanako, Eiji is someone who grew up doing poorly in school and now wants a fresh start (as he tackles writing poetry). The pair quickly become friends as each share an affection for senryu. Though an unlikely match, could love be in the air?

One of the best elements of the production is the exquisite animation. The program has some rather compelling art work and the animation style is impressive throughout the entire series run. Unlike many romantic anime series, Senryu Girl explores a compelling art style which is more artistic: a curious blend of styles that precede it. The style reminds one of classic animation while paving a modern sensibility for a slice-of-life drama at the same time. Kudos to the animators for being so creative. The art direction by Shinobu Takahashi (Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho) was a rousing success.

A must-see anime gem.

Edited by Yuji Kondo (Sword Art Online, Mitsuboshi Colors), Senryu Girl is a charming series. Throughout the entire program, the editing was never under-cooked. The program finds a nice balance between focusing on the characters and on the romantic elements. Kodo never allows the series to run out of energy from scene to scene and the delicate editing deserves to be commended.

Another element of the production that impressed was the original series music composed by Akiyuki Tateyama (Laid-Back Camp, Kemono Friends). The score was delightful. The music gave the story some serenity which added to the experience. The music is truly compelling. There is something remarkable about how beautiful the music is: Senryu Girl features a top-notch original score.

Senryu Girl is a massive success because of the exceptional screenwriting. Written and directed by Masato Jinbo (Restaurant to Another World, Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei), Senryu Girl is a charming series that feels as though it could appeal to a wide range of audiences. The program is heartfelt and engaging. The characterizations are compelling and each episode seems to have been crafted with a special level of care. Despite being a rather short program, Senryu Girl is fantastic. A brilliant slice-of-life gem that demands to be seen. Don't miss out on this great production.

Arriving on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks, Senryu Girl is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The release is exceptional in the video-arena and fans of the series will be quite pleased with the colorful animation on display. The series has a nice laid-back color palette. The art work looks stunning and is truly beautiful to behold. The efforts of the team of animators is well preserved with the strong encoding effort from Sentai Filmworks. Given the distinctive style of animation, the presentation does a rock solid job of showcasing all the subtle details in the animation.

Senryu Girl is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 with English subtitles. The sound quality of the release is top-notch throughout the entire series. The English dub quality is quite good and is well preserved by the lossless sound mix. Either of the lossless options will provide viewers with a satisfactory experience. The music sounds lush and so refined. Dialogue is crisp, clear, and easy to understand.
