After experimenting with more narrative-driven sexploitation in “For Men Only,” writer/director Pete Walker graduates to feature-length naughtiness with 1969’s “School for Sex,” expanding his creative interests and run time, providing more opportunity for nudity and silliness. “School for Sex” is barely a movie, but it does actually live up to its promise of bawdy behavior, though Walker doesn’t seem particularly aware that most viewers aren’t watching the picture for its comedic value.
The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation hits many HD highs during the viewing experience, delivering clarity when it can, showing off detail with costuming and set decoration, while close-ups, when not ruined by focus issues, retain texture. The source is in rough shape, with plenty of scratches to spot and a few points of damage. This presentation also may have been assembled from various prints, as quality jumps from time to time (opening titles look horrible). Colors are acceptable, with primaries slightly faded but capable.
The 2.0 Dolby Digital sound mix is similar to "For Men Only," offering a muffled listening experience that makes dialogue exchanges a bit challenging to hear at times. Intelligibility isn't completely wiped out, but production limitations and age conspire to keep "School for Sex" sonically uncomfortable. Music is equally average, periodically competing in volume with performances. Hiss and pops are detected.
Walker doesn't direct anything here, with basics like storytelling and performances all over the map. It's a cheap attempt at titillation, and one that's not the least bit amusing. It's a blessing the effort isn't angry, but "School for Sex" doesn't achieve any of the limited goals it sets out for itself.
