Schindler's List 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman January 7, 2020

Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for Director Steven Spielberg's unforgettable Holocaust film 'Schindler's List.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Schindler's List 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

The Schindler's List SteelBook simply references and recreates two iconic images from the promotional materials for its front and rear panels, which are matte and flat rather than glossy and slick. They will not show excessive fingerprints. The front panel depicts prominently the little girl in the red coat, standing in front of a gaggle of Nazi soldiers and Jewish prisoners in the background, none of them photographically well defined. The terrain on which she stands is very bright, but the background characters fade towards black. There is no text on the front side. The rear panel depicts the image of two hands clenching, one stretching down from the top, the other, extending from a red jacket sleeve, reaching up from the bottom. A partial list of saved prisoners runs down the length of the SteelBook in the visible areas. Universal and Amblin logos appear at the bottom, as does a little bit of legalese and a model number. The spine features the film's title in a silvery, slightly reflective color, accompanied by "25th anniversary edition" text. A Universal logo appears at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code, which is on the rear of a small folded leaflet advertising the USC Shoah Foundation and sharing a little more information about the film and its bonus features, is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a black-and-white collage of character portraits and several additional images from the film.

Schindler's List 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

The Schindler's List SteelBook is classy, refined, and simple but also unoriginal. It looks good and feels great in the hand, but fans might have wished for something new rather than repurposed art. Either way, the UHD inside is first-rate and the movie is a must-have for any serious film library. Highly recommended.
