Scarface 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman October 23, 2019

Universal has released Brian De Palma's epic 1983 Crime film 'Scarface' to the UHD format. New specifications include 2160p/HDR video and DTS:X audio. This set also includes the film on remastered Blu-ray as well as the original 1932 'Scarface,' Directed by Howard Hawks, on Blu-ray in high definition for the first time. The 1932 film is currently exclusive to this set. Also included is a large "The World Is Yours" statue. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for a more in-depth look at the statue.

Note: the scores above reflect only the 1983 film's UHD disc; please click through the appropriate links below to see the scoring, and read the reviews, for the 1932 film and the remastered Blu-ray.

The discs and statue ship in a long, vertically oriented box that measures approximately 10.25" high, 5.75" wide, and 5" deep. A large "J-Card" is included and is glued to the back. It conveys all of the usual information on the rear -- a visual and text breakdown of what's included, a few stills from the 1983 film, bonus feature listings, billing blocks, and legalese -- while the bottom is home to the UPC and tech specs. The front essentially advertises what's inside. With the card removed, buyers are treated to a nearly full view of the included statue, which is seen through a clear piece of plastic built into the cardboard box. The sides are home to the Tony Montana intertwined logo, which looks like the letters are made out of bones. The top advertises the film's name and includes "The World Is Yours Limited Edition" text. The bottom is blank. The rear panel features the same image of Tony Montana that's seen on the UHD's front cover: the black and gold colors behind him, the character holding a gun and looking angrily below him.

The UHD case sits behind the statue in a cutout that hold it securely but not tightly. There's nothing special about the UHD packaging. It's a basic black Amaray case that holds three discs, two on a leaf in the middle and one on a tab in the rear (the discs don't really want to stay securely on the hubs and two were loose upon arrival, and the leaf on the review sample doesn't want to stay in place, either, falling out of the tabs holding it several times in just a couple of days of general usage). Nothing special here; it's a basic case in every way.

The statue weighs in at 1 pound, 5.5 ounces. It's hefty and feels solid in the hand, certainly not made of anything valuable (feels like plastic) but it looks good and won't tip over if someone breathes on it. The statue measures at just shy of 10" tall and its base has a diameter of about 4". It will serve Scarface fans well and it's worthy of a centerpiece part of any collectibles room or home theater decor.

Scarface 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Scarface's limited edition is a solid and fairly affordable release. The highlights of course include the UHD and the remastered Blu-ray but the gems of the set are the 1932 film finally on Blu-ray (and looking quite good overall) and the statue, which is hefty and solid and makes for a fine display and conversation piece. This entire set earns my highest recommendation.
