Saw VI Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman December 24, 2022

Note: This version of this film is available on Blu-ray as part of Via Vision Entertainment's Saw: The Ultimate Collection 4K.

Nothing screams the holiday season like the Saw franchise, am I right? (At least if the emphasis is on screaming.) Via Vision Entertainment is offering fans of the series some rather luxe packaging, but a release that is a bit odd in that it combines 4K UHD and 1080 offerings of the Saw films. The release more or less duplicates the releases that fans on this side of several ponds have seen, and so relevant portions of reviews I've personally written may be reprinted here, and some reviews of the Via Vision releases may contain further links to Region A reviews I didn't have a hand in.

Saw VI was released on Blu-ray by Lionsgate itself kind of astoundingly almost thirteen years ago, and like its two immediate predecessors on Blu-ray, this release has more "contemporary" video and audio codecs going for it. Those interested in a plot recap are encouraged to read Marty Liebman's Saw VI Blu-ray review of the original Lionsgate Blu-ray release.

Saw VI Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Saw VI is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Via Vision Entertainment with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. This is just the latest installment of "different reviewers means (very slightly) different opinions", as I found the video presentation here very much in keeping with the previous two entries' generally excellent technical merits, helped no doubt by newer and hopefully improved codecs and compression tactics. This is another pretty gritty and often quite dimly lit enterprise, but it still retains a surprisingly consistent level of detail in all but the very darkest scenes. While grain certainly spikes per Marty's comments in his reviews, I personally didn't feel there was anything overly problematic. The film's often lurid palette is well represented.

Saw VI Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

As with video element, I'm evidently a little more pleased with this disc's DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track than Marty was (I should note that again for whatever reason this Via Vision Entertainment version does not have the two other audio options that the Region A 1080 release from Lionsgate looks like it had). The surround activity here is to my ears the equal of the excellently immersive tracks found on the two previous films in the series, and both effects and score offer some raucous engagement of the side and rear channels. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.

Saw VI Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

Marty's review is so old it doesn't feature our "new, improved" way of listing things, but Marty does provide quite a bit more information on these supplements in his Saw VI Blu-ray review (my overall score for the supplements is a bit lower than Marty's, for those who keep track of such things):

  • Audio Commentary by director Kevin Greutert and writers Marcus Dunstant & Patrick Melton

  • Audio Commentary by producer Mark Burg and executive producers Peter Block & Jason Constantine

  • The Traps of Saw VI (HD; 8:50)

  • Jigsaw Revealed (HD; 6:01)

  • A Killer Maze: Making Saw: Game Over (HD; 10:40)

  • Music Videos
  • Mushroomhead "Your Soul is Mine" (SD; 4:52)

  • Memphis May Fire "Ghost in the Mirror" (SD; 3:01)

  • Hatebreed "In Ashes They Shall Reap" (SD; 3:18)

  • Suicide Silence "Genocide / Saw VI Remix" (SD; 3:54)

  • Note: A Play All option is available for the above music videos.
  • Theatrical Trailer (HD; 00:51)

Saw VI Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

While I'm evidently slightly more pleased with the video and audio presentations on this disc than Marty was with regard to the Region A release from Lionsgate, kind of ironically I seem not to be quite the fan of the film that Marty was. This is in some ways a carbon copy of the previous films, and while it does offer the requisite mayhem and horrifying traps, it may not offer much else. Technical merits are solid and the supplements are enjoyable, for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
