Saving Private Ryan 4K Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Martin Liebman October 9, 2020
Paramount and Best Buy have collaborated on a 4K UHD store exclusive SteelBook release for Director Steven Spielberg's epic World War II film
'Saving Private Ryan.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below
for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Saving Private Ryan 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

The Saving Private Ryan SteelBook is textured and flat; it will not fingerprint or slip around in the hand. The package front, back, and spine is
designed to resemble a well worn ammo can. "200 cartridges 7.62MM" appears bottom, identifying the caliber of ammo that is, or originally was, in the
container. There is also a lot number on the lower right-hand side. In the center is the familiar "floating heads" image depicting Sergeant Horvath,
Captain Miller,
Private Ryan, and Private Reiben. Below them is the image of Miller in silhouette with the film's title and actor names also included. As noted, the rear
panel simply carries over the illusion, broken up only by a SteelBook logo and legalese bottom center, a Paramount logo on the left, and a model
number on the right. Printed on the spine is the film's title, center, a Paramount logo at the top and a (different) model number and Blu-ray logo at the
bottom.
Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in
staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a smorgasbord of odds and ends, including four black-and-white
photos of scenes and characters from the film on the left. There's also a bullet on the left panels' top right. On the right hand side are three more
photos, a map, some patches, a lapel pin, and a few more bullets. All of it is against a dark background, presumably the inside of the ammo can.

Saving Private Ryan 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

This appears to be the same SteelBook Paramount released both in 2014 and 2018 and, in fact, the copyright on the bottom back lists 2014, so it seems the
studio has just repurposed existing product. It's not a particularly interesting SteelBook, either, aiming for something different yet dropping a familiar
image on the front. The inside is decent enough but in a movie full of classic imagery more could have been done. Of course the movie is a timeless
classic and the UHD is of reference quality. Highly recommended.
