Reviewed by Martin Liebman August 14, 2017
In addition to the basic standalone release of 'Sailor Moon R: Season 2, Part 1,' Viz Pictures has
released a companion boxed set which includes the same six-disc (3 Blu-ray, 3 DVD) collection inside an attractive and sturdy slip box, as well
as a
full-color companion booklet and a spacer for 'Sailor Moon R: Season 2, Part 2,' which is only sold separately. See below for
additional details and more in-depth coverage of the added bonus booklet included with this set.

Sailor Moon R: Season 2, Part 1 Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

Sailor Moon R: Season 2, Part 1's limited edition is what one might call "minimalist." It's very attractive, but it's not complex. The box fits both
seasons (though, again, only one is included; a spacer saves roomful the other) and the booklet, which is certainly the highlight piece. The booklet, full
color and well put together, offers a diverse amount of content. Season one and two summaries, as well as episode summaries for season two are
included, so for those who only own the
half-season
that ships with this set, be forewarned. Each summary is featured on its own page with a pair of images. Additionally, cast voice credits are listed for
both English and Japanese. The booklet contains lyrics for "Moonlight Legend," "Heart Moving," and "Princess Moon." Additionally, two-page character
spreads with artwork and bios for Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Venus, and Tuxedo Mask are featured, as is artwork
depicting Queen Beryl, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, Kunzite, Luna & Artemis, Prince Endymion, Princess Serenity, Naru & Umino, the Sailor Guardians in
various poses (transformed and school girls), and all five of the Dark Kingdom's main characters. Finally, a random advertisement for Season 1 Part 2 is included, which would have been better included as a
paper insert rather than as part of the book. That's about it. It's very nice and carefully put together, booklet and box alike. It'll look great on the shelf,
particularly as part of a complete Sailor Moon collection.

Sailor Moon R: Season 2, Part 1 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

The poor video quality notwithstanding, this set should draw the eye of any collector and Sailor Moon fan. There are certainly many Anime
special edition releases that ship with more
"stuff," but this one's elegantly packaged with an attractive slip box and artwork and features a striking full-color booklet. It's a shame it doesn't at
least ship with the additional character cards found in the Crystal box sets, but fans should nevertheless be pleased. If those same fans can swallow
the video quality -- and that's a big if -- this set
comes
recommended. Otherwise, wait for a significant price drop to coincide with the significant lack of proper video quality.
