Beautiful, hip, and young, poor Lola has but 20 minutes to locate a missing bag containing 100,000 Deutsche marks or come up with the money some other way — if she can't, gangsters are going to kill her boyfriend. A pulse-raising race against time, the film employs a startling array of innovative techniques to present three separate scenarios, all departing from a single split-second decision Lola makes.

Sony has released the 1998 film 'Run Lola Run,' directed by Tom Tykwer and starring Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu, to the UHD format. New specifications include 2160p/Dolby Vision video as well as audio that has been re-encoded to the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless configuration. All of the extras from the 2008 Blu-ray are included, as are a few more. No Blu-ray disc is included; all extras are found on the UHD disc. At time of writing, this release is exclusive to the eleven-film Sony Pictures Classics: 30th Anniversary Collection boxed set.
The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc.
Sony's 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD presentation of Run Lola Run is good enough to run out and buy the entire Sony Pictures Classics boxed set for.
It's a sight to behold, first for the intense clarity and filmic accuracy the image presents. The picture holds to a flatteringly natural grain structure that is
structurally rich and satisfying, recreating a perfect cinematic flavor for home consumption. Accompanying is a splendid array of textural grace,
including high yield skin and hair clarity, clothing definition, and intense clarity and sharpness to all of the urban environments seen throughout the
film; viewers will never be left imagining, unless the mind drifts to home theater bliss at the sheer majesty of this presentation. There are no encode
artifacts or print shortcomings, either.
Dolby Vision was practically made for Run Lola Run. Color is as much a part of the film's lifeblood as is the music. Lola herself is the most
colorful part
of the film; the green pants and the aqua colored top enjoy greatly superior definition and depth next to any other previous home video version, and of
course the red hair is synonymous with the film and flows with incredible elegance and pop in every frame in which the character appears on the
screen, which is most of the film. Of course, various locations around the city present with natural vividness and punch while still holding depth and
realism. The grading is dialed in to perfection. Consider also brilliant whites (especially subtitles), gorgeous blacks, and healthy skin tones, and this is a
first-rate presentation from Sony.
Rather than re-release Run Lola Run with the original Blu-ray's Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack, Sony has re-encoded the tracks (original German and English and Spanish dubs) into the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless encode. I cannot vouch for how the two compare, but this new 5.1 encode is very dynamic and intense. It's crystal-clear, offering heart-pounding musical cues, intense surround content and action aplenty, and clear and centered dialogue. The techno-pulse musical rhythm is very dynamic, and the film seems to slow down when it suddenly disappears (listen around the 10-minute mark). Voices swirl around the stage moments later, the music kicks back up, and the energy amps into overdrive. Even without the added channels that would have been included in an Atmos track -- which would have really pounded this one home -- there's very little sense of lack at the 5.1 channel output. This one is dynamo just for the sheer complimentary thrill of it. Score, songs, and sound effects are as much a backbone for this movie as is the kinetic energy playing out on the screen, and Sony's track commands this audio content with all the richness and definition and immersion one could ever want.
This UHD release of Run Lola Run includes all of the extras from the legacy Blu-ray (please click here for full coverage) in addition to a few new supplements,
including a 40-minute making-of and a new audio commentary track. As it ships in that boxed set, a
non-embossed slipcover is included.
Run Lola Run is probably the closest thing there is to a "crowd pleaser" in the Sony Pictures Classics UHD boxed set, but it is also quite possibly the most experimental film in the set, too. It looks incredible, sounds great, and the blend of new and returning extras are a treat. Very highly recommend!
