Rugrats in Paris: The Movie continues the exciting adventures of the rugrats. Based on the television series created by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, and Paul Germain, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie has some fun with the concept and takes them to a new location. A charming and entertaining movie for fans of the Nickelodeon animated series.
The gang of kids is back for more fun.. this time in Paris! Tommy Pickles (Elizabeth Daily), Chuckie (Christine Cavanaugh), Angelica Pickles (Cheryl Chase), and the rest of the gang are visiting Paris and have a new mission awaiting them: to help their friend Chuckie find a new mom to be with his dad. Is there romance in the air of Paris?
The characters continue to be essential to the success of the franchise. The rugrats are charming and wonderfully imaginative characters. The series established these characters well and the films have expanded on these origins. Tommy is a compelling lead (with bold enthusiasm). For the sequel, a personal fan-favorite is given a nice highlight: Chuckie is given plenty of time to shine. Yet it's consistently the zany mastermind, Angelica, who steals the spotlight.
The animation is outstanding. The sequel is even better looking than the original Rugrats motion-picture. The Rugrats in Paris: The Movie continues to showcase art direction by Gena Kornyshev (character designer for The Wild Thornberrys and As Told by Ginger). This bold animated creation looks remarkably detailed and imaginative in the sequel. The trip to Paris yields some great results: a remarkable showcase of creativity across the French country.
Destination: Paris.
The score composed by Mark Mothersbaugh (The Rugrats Movie, The Lego Movie) is terrific fun and highlights the misadventures of the gang. The score builds upon the foundation of the music for the original Rugrats feature-film and continues to play in the same sandbox. The results are terrific. A wonderful example of animated film scoring and the efforts of Mothersbaugh as a composer.
The screenplay by J. David Stem (The Rugrats Movie), David N. Weiss (Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius), Barbara Herndon (Rugrats), Jill Gorey (The Wild Thornberrys), and Kate Boutilier (Rugrats) is great entertainment. The script is wonderful fun and has a great time exploring these characters and their world. The script stays faithful to the characters and to the tone of the series while making the film expand on the original premise.
Directed by Stig Bergqvist (Duckman, Captain Sabertooth) and Paul Demeyer (Duckman, Mission Force One), Rugrats in Paris: The Movie is a wonderful animated gem for fans of the hit series. Though the second installment is not quite on par with the original outing, the film is still a fun experience from beginning to end. The filmmakers managed to make a memorable movie with outstanding spectacle. A Nickelodeon classic.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Paramount, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The presentation is outstanding. The feature-film has been sourced from a brand new 4K restoration. The colors on the release are vastly improved. The animation has arguably never appeared better than on this release. Everything from the background animation to the line art looks splendid. A solid presentation and encode by Paramount.
The release is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound in 24 bit high-resolution. The lossless audio quality is top-notch. The release sounds exceptionally clear and dialogue is easy enough to understand. The soundtrack and score are well reproduced and integrated in to the surround mix. Another exceptional effort by Paramount.
