Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman September 21, 2018
Well, of course there had to be another volume — this is a Time Life series, after all. For those scratching their heads over that perhaps
cryptic comment, I refer you to our Rock
& Roll Hall of Fame Concerts Blu-ray review, where I discussed my obviously troubling obsession with both Time Life book and Time Life music
series, both of which were major parts of my collecting life in my childhood and adolescence. Time Life took a good long while to follow the above
linked release with Rock & Roll Hall of
Fame: In Concert, but now they seem to be getting back in the good old “Time Life swing of things” (so to speak) with this particular
release, which comes a mere five months for the third entry in the series to be released. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert covered the years of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017,
while the release currently under review travels backward to offer 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Once again, as with the earlier release, this offers a
cornucopia of acts both being inducted and doing the inductions, and part of the fun is in fact seeing some of the musicians as veritable emcees, if
only for a moment.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Time Life with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1.
This continues the generally excellent sharp and well detailed look of the series, though I'd rate this just a notch down in video quality from the last
release, if only by a hair. Part of this is due to some slight instability in the pixellated display behind some of the performers or induction speakers, and
some is due to some odd lighting choices which add just a hint of posterizing a time or two. Generally speaking, though, the palette is nicely suffused
and natural looking, and detail levels remain high. There are some very minor passing combing artifacts on the "usual suspects" like fast strumming
hands and the like.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore features robust sounding DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 mixes. Aside from some ambient
crowd noise, there's not much difference between the surround and stereo mixes during the induction ceremonies, but things open up considerably
during the actual performances on the surround track. The most significant change to my ears was a rather nice boost in the lower midrange and even
lower frequencies, where the surround track offered much more energetic support for acts like Green Day and Alice Cooper. All elements are rendered
cleanly and clearly and there are no problems with distortion or other distractions.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras
There are no supplements on either of the discs, but there's a nicely done insert booklet with a little information on each of the ceremonies and full
performance credits.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation
This particular release frankly didn't quite capture my fancy like the last two, in part because this particular group of inductees may not have been as
personally moving to me as some in the two earlier releases. That said, it's quite possible some fans will find this the most satisfying of the
releases thus far because of these inductees, so I recommend looking over the rather wide array of performing talent that's on hand for these
enjoyable ceremonies. Technical merits are solid, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: In Concert: Encore comes Recommended.
