Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman November 22, 2020

This UHD version of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter differs slightly from Sony's 2017 release. It adds several new supplements and includes a new menu layout to match the other films in the UHD collection box. The bundled Blu-ray is identical to the 2017 issue. There may be very minor variations to the UHD's video and audio presentations but any alterations are subtle and do not impact the viewing experience one way or the other.

Alice (Milla Jovovich) awakens amongst the ruins of Washington, D.C. She comes into contact with the Red Queen (Ever Gabo Anderson) who directs her to return to Raccoon City, and more precisely Umbrella Corp headquarters, and prevent those in charge from releasing a deadly antivirus that will finish the job and wipe out the rest of the living. And she has only 48 hours to do so. At the same time, Umbrella is gathering forces to prevent Alice from successfully making her return. But she eventually teams up with a band of survivors, which includes an old friend in Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), and the team makes its final push on Umbrella in a desperate attempt to save what's left of the world.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc.

This UHD found in the Resident Evil box set appears to be nearly the same, if not identical, as that previously released in 2017. Slight discrepancies in bitrate data exist, so it's possible there has been a very slight tweaking one way other. There are certainly no major alterations and if there are any differences, they make no significant impact on the viewing experience. Please click here for a full review.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

Like the video output there are slight discrepancies in audio bitrate but one would be hard-pressed to notice any differences, if there are any. As through the entire Resident Evil UHD experience, the audio is thunderous yet refined, a pleasure to experience. Please click here for a full review.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

Sony's new Resident Evil: The Final Chapter UHD includes three new supplements. The bundled Blu-ray is identical to the 2017 issue and contains the extras outlined below. Please click here for full coverage.

UHD:

  • NEW! Maximum Carnage: Best Kills (1080p, 4:32): Paul W.S. Anderson and additional cast and crew explore inspirations for some of the series' most grisly visuals. It also covers why the franchise resonates with fans, Anderson's "vivid and disturbed" imagination, and more. It follows with some of the violent highlights from the series.
  • NEW! Creature Chronology (1080p, 6:02): Sourcing creatures from the video games, respecting the games, making use of practical effects, digital supports, and more. It also looks at some of the featured zombies.
  • NEW! Trailers (1080p): Included are Theatrical Trailer 1 (2:25), Theatrical Trailer 2 (2:32), International Teaser (1:44), and International Trailer (2:25).

Blu-ray:

  • Retaliation Mode with Paul & Milla
  • Stunts & Weaponry
  • Explore the Hive
  • The Bad Ass Trinity & The Women of Resident Evil
  • Sneak Peek: Resident Evil: Vendetta
  • Previews

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

The Final Chapter embodies the Resident Evil movies quite well: it's not a work of art but it's effective in delivering movement and noise in abundance while building (and here concluding) an arcing story through a zombie riddled wasteland. The UHD appears to be close to identical to the previous issue with any alterations minor at best and not drastically altering the viewing and listening experiences. The UHD adds a few new extras. Recommended.
