Repo! The Genetic Opera has all the makings of a cult sensation if not exactly a classic, even if at least some of those makings seem to be have been, well, Franken(steined/furtered) from other efforts like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. As seemingly "revolutionary" as some early rock or pop concept albums, and then later actual rock operas, may have seemed at the time, many of them offered what might jokingly be referred to as a staple of more old fashioned musical entertainments: namely, melodies and clever lyrics. Unfortunately, the song score offered in this "musical" is like an unending onslaught of propulsive head banging bass and drum drones with quasi-rap spoken semi-rhymed "lyrics", only occasionally interspersed with supposedly more "hummable" (?) fare like a big solo for Sarah Brightman. Repo! The Genetic Opera received a long ago 1080 release courtesy of Lionsgate (review link below), along with a soundtrack CD that is evidently still available on demand as a CD-R, but now Lionsgate Limited is revisiting the title in 4K with SteelBook packaging.

As mentioned above, Repo! The Genetic Opera received a 1080 release by Lionsgate way back in 2009 and Martin Liebman's Repo! The Genetic Opera Blu-ray review offers plot information, a list of supplements and a reaction to that disc's technical presentation.

Repo! The Genetic Opera is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate Films' etailer Lionsgate Limited with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 1.85:1. An AVC encoded 1080p transfer in the same aspect ratio is included on a separate disc. Bousman mentions in the supplements how this was his first HD capture after having worked in 35mm, and according to the IMDb he used a Panavision Genesis. Marty wasn't especially enthusiastic about Lionsgate's own 1080 release from years ago, but that said some of what Marty overtly mentions in his review in terms of blooming highlights and an overblown look are, as mentioned by Darren Lynn Bousman himself in supplements included with this package, an intentional decision. In that regard, the 4K presentation in particular is even more prone to at least near blooming and with almost effulgent halos surrounding objects within the frame, all of which gives things a kind eerily supernatural look, apart and aside from any "spirit manifestations". The palette is unbelievably powerful throughout, again by design, with the Dolby Vision / HDR grades really able to fully exploit some of the depth and almost surreal approach to hues that Bousman again overtly discusses in the some of the supplements. Blues and reds are particularly vivid, but a number of the overall grading schemes for various vignettes, which can vary from cool blues to warmer almost mustard yellows, offer some amazing highlights in the 4K HDR presentation in particular. Detail levels are typically great, with an understanding that the overblown and undeniably HD video style here can make things look smooth and soft. Black levels are impressive and there is at least some improvement in gradations of darker tones courtesy of the HDR / Dolby Vision grades that can ameliorate some if not all of the crush.

Repo! The Genetic Opera offers an often impressive Dolby Atmos mix that is able to offer some effects literally above the din of some of those aforementioned virtually nonstop barrages of low frequency material that pulse through the film. In the mastering suite featurette included as a supplement, Bousman mentions some of the fun directional panning that is evident from the get go as some of the opening "ads" and cartoon adjacent material spill out, but to my ears the biggest improvement here over the previous 1080 release's DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix (kind of unusual for its time), is the ability of the Atmos mix to nicely separate vocals, both spoken and sung, from the underlying morass of instrumentation and percussion. The mix kind of reminded of some of the "four walls of sound" aspect of some the audio Blu-ray hi res quad mixes I've reviewed through the years, with the side and rear channels offering some of the same underlying instrumentation. Probably by design, there's really not a lot of dynamic range on tap here, with everything pretty much "turned up to 11" by default. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.

Note: While both the 4K and 1080 discs in this package share some of the same supplements, this is to my increasingly faulty memory the first time a Lionsgate Limited's 4K disc has some extra bonus content in addition to what's duplicated from the 1080 disc's bonus features. There is supposedly another supplement called Addicted to the Shadowcast listed as a 4K exclusive, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Repo! This Movie: The Anatomy of a Cult (HD; 2:06:28) is a detailed overview of the project by Spookydan Walker with a ton of new interviews along with an equal assortment of archival footage and background information, some of which is arguably more interesting than the completed project. This is going to be a major attraction for any longtime fans of the film.

Lionsgate Limited has packaged this in a really nicely designed SteelBook that features a profile of Paul Sorvino (with some "skeletal" underlayment) on the front panel, and then a "prognosis report" for his character Rotti Largo on the back. The interior panels really only offer anything on the left side, with a rep(r)o of a "coming 2057" poster. The SteelBook encloses four glossy heavy stock artcards and a digital version. A Mylar O-ring overlays Sorvino's profile with the Repo Man himself on the front and production information on the rear.

Repo! The Genetic Opera 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

After having conquered Broadway with Oklahoma! and Carousel, and shortly before they would reconquer it again with South Pacific, the vaunted duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein actually stumbled a bit with their interstitial 1947 effort, the now little remembered and/or performed musical Allegro. Some snarky critic (ahem) summed up the show at the time with the biting description "Andante", and in that regard music nerds might also joke that this film centered on a character named Largo might be more of a Larghissimo (or, considering the cemetery robbing aspect of the story, at least a Grave). There's a lot to look at here, and maybe too much to have to listen to after a while, but this odd hybrid has its adherents, and those fans are almost certain to be pleased with the solid technical merits and well rounded supplements Lionsgate Limited is offering with this release. Nicely designed SteelBook packaging should only make this more attractive for anyone considering making a purchase.
