Raya and the Last Dragon 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 18, 2021

Disney and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for the 2021 digitally animated film 'Raya and the Last Dragon.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Raya and the Last Dragon 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

Disney's smooth and glossy SteelBook depicts Raya on the front, prominently and filling the full frame from the waist up. She's facing directly forward, her head tilted slightly downward, a small smirk on her face. A large hat brim is covering her eyes. Her hands rest atop her sword's pommel. She's wearing a red cape above darker attire. A green out-of-focus background appears behind her. The panel is saturated in rain. It's the same image seen on the main menu screen on both the Blu-ray and the UHD. The rear panel is simply a black color, brightening towards the center where there is a full body depiction of the film's main dragon character, Sisu. The spine is a dark red color with the film's title in white, along with "Disney," filling much of the length. An UltraHD logo appears at the top and a smaller Disney logo has been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code floats; there are no tabs to hold it down. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. Curiously, there is a third, solo hub on the left that is empty. Whether Disney planned a larger special edition as is sometimes the case with the bulk of the extras on a dedicated second Blu-ray disc or if this case was the only one readily available is unknown, but fear not; there is no missing disc. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features Raya on the left and Sisu on the right, looking at one another against a dark background. Pretty basic stuff.

Raya and the Last Dragon 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

This is a fairly typical Disney SteelBook considering the finish and the central, no fuss rear panel image. The front artwork is sharp and very well done. The inside panel image isn't overly creative but it satisfies requirements. The movie is decent, the video quality on both discs is good, and the audio is, well, Disney. Recommended.
