Set in the ravaged post-WWIII world, this grim sci-fi fantasy centers on the vengeful quest of a bereaved husband whose wife was raped and murdered by a gang of leather-clad bikers. After getting his revenge, the fellow roars off on the other's bike and along the way encounters another survivor who has food and weapons. They set off together and then find a beautiful young woman who joins them. Though there is strength in numbers, their troubles are far from over for the bikers aren't through with them yet.

The hunted

Presented in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Ravagers arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Imprint Films.
The release is sourced from an older master that was supplied by Sony Pictures. This master has some limitations, the most obvious of which emerge in darker areas, but the overall quality of the visuals is very good. For example, delineation and clarity range from good to very good. Depth is also pleasing, but in several darker areas some of the more delicate nuances can be better. At the moment, there is a bit of very light crushing that a proper new master will undoubtedly eliminate. Density levels are very good. There are no traces of problematic digital corrections. Color balance is very convincing. In fact, I do not think that there is much room for meaningful improvements in terms of balance. Select primaries and supporting nuances can be healthier, and if they are the dynamic range of the visuals will be strengthened, but the current color settings are very good. There are no stability issues. A few nicks pop up, but there are no large cuts, debris, marks, warped or torn frames to report. (Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray release. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your player regardless of your geographical location).

There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English LPCM 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
I have mentioned many times in the past that even very old masters that are licensed from Sony Pictures boast excellent audio tracks, and the master that was provided for Ravagers continues the trend. Clarity, sharpness, and stability are outstanding. I think that dynamic intensity is very good as well, but you need to keep in mind that the soundtrack does have some native limitations that make it impossible for action sequences to sound as aggressive as similar modern content can.

Most unfortunately, there are no bonus features to be found on this release.

Ravagers cannot provide the same thrills and chills classic films like Escape from New York, The Omega Man, and On the Beach do because it sees the vast wasteland that has emerged after WWIII differently. Ravagers is much easier to compare to a low-budget curiosity like Cries of Ecstasy, Blows of Death, which also promotes the idea that the lucky survivors roaming the wasteland will be very strange, almost certainly delusional characters. I quite liked the unevenness of Ravagers because it frequently forces it to be allergic to logic, which makes it a refreshingly different film. RECOMMENDED.
