Ralph Breaks the Internet 4K + 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

A must-own for 3D fans: Ralph Breaks the Internet (Japan Exclusive) has stunning use of 3D

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard August 23, 2019

Ralph Breaks the Internet is an exciting sequel to the fan-favorite Wreck-It Ralph. Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) now face the possible closure of their beloved game: Sugar Rush. With a broken part that the owner of their arcade cannot afford to purchase, both of our heroes must work together to find the part online as they are zapped directly into the internet. A strange quest awaits.

Traveling across online games and websites, the characters try and raise funds to purchase the missing equation in saving Sugar Rush and run across some brand new characters, such as the undisputed badass Shank (Gal Gadot). Filled with a number of incredible Disney cameos (such as the classic Disney Princesses scene) and breathtaking animation to boot, Ralph Breaks the Internet is that rare sequel that's every bit as good as the original.

"Did you know that 3D is AWESOME?!"

To read more on the film and release please refer to the review published by my fellow Blu-ray.com colleague, Martin Liebman. Please note my rating on the film itself is my own opinion on the film.

Ralph Breaks the Internet 4K + 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

For anyone who has seen and enjoyed the fantastic 3D for the original Wreck-It Ralph feature film (reviewed here), I just want to say: Ralph Breaks the Internet has even better 3D than the original. Imagine that. This is a stunning presentation that greatly enhances the filmmaking. Having seen it theatrically in 3D as well as viewing it again on home media, it's great to see the 3D presentation preserved so beautifully. The colors are absolutely fantastic and practically leap off the screen with radiance. The depth is terrific and immersive. The use of 3D effects is also creative and exciting to behold without ever becoming a distraction from the storytelling.

Without a doubt, Ralph Breaks the Internet has one of the best animated 3D presentations I've seen. Some of the sequences are stunning with the way in which Ralph and Vanellope are tossed into the "internet" and all of its strange wonder. It's hard to believe the 3D presentation was almost passed over and is now a Japan exclusive release. 3D fans owe it to themselves to import it and experience the film in the best way possible. It's even better than the original.

Ralph Breaks the Internet 4K + 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

It is worth noting that the audio on this release varies across the separate discs included in the set: the 3D presentation features a superb DTS-HD Master Audio track in both English and Japanese (and the Japanese presentation even includes optional English subtitles for the 3D disc, so viewers can watch in Japanese for fun if desired). The standard Blu-ray disc contains the same audio track while the 4K disc provides a Dolby Atmos presentation.

Ralph Breaks the Internet 4K + 3D Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

The set includes the 3D Blu-ray disc, standard Blu-ray disc, and 4K UHD disc. The 3D disc is a Japan Exclusive and is only available in this release.

For a complete break-down of the on-disc supplements please click here to view the published review on the standard edition. The special features included on the 3D edition remain the same as the main Blu-ray and no supplements are included on the 3D disc itself.

Ralph Breaks the Internet 4K + 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Ralph Breaks the Internet is one of my favorite Disney sequels to ever come out from the studio. It greatly expands upon the characters established and beloved in the first film and the end result is a highly entertaining follow up with an endless array of fun references to internet websites and the Disney universe (with Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney princesses) taking the stage. What a total blast!

Watching the film in 3D is equally exciting. As a 3D enthusiast I was disheartened when there wasn't any 3D editions announced for the film at first (especially given how amazing the 3D presentation is for this film) and the possibility of it not even being released on the format felt akin to losing the part Ralph and Vanellope must search for to save Sugar Rush. Thank goodness for the Japan Exclusive 3D release of Ralph Breaks the Internet as it saves the day for 3D fans.

While the price tag on this edition is certainly high, it is worth every penny to be able to support the format and to get such an amazing 3D presentation. Even as a 4K fan, I cannot imagine living in a world without great 3D presentations like this one being available on home media: the 3D greatly enhanced my overall enjoyment and appreciation of the film and is without a doubt my preferred method of watching Ralph Breaks the Internet. This is a must own edition for all dedicated 3D enthusiasts.
