Journey into adventure with gangsters, the old west, and sea-fare

With the collaborative effort of Kino Lorber and Lobster Films, the RKO Classic Adventures collection is an enticing set of three early pre-code gems which have been preserved by the library of congress: The Painted Desert (1931), The Pay-Off (1930), and The Silver Horde (1930). While the “adventure” description might be used somewhat liberally for the purpose of this collection, a sense of adventure does reside in each feature. The films in the set range from western (The Painted Desert) to gangster (The Pay-Off) and romantic-drama (The Silver Horde).

Fans of classic genre films will find the entertaining RKO Classic Adventures collection to be an impressive set containing three worthwhile films from RKO Radio Pictures. Each film in the set entertains and surprises. The best of the bunch is The Pay-Off (a humorous gangster film) while western fans will be most pleased with The Painted Desert (which is an excellent adventure). The Silver Horde isn't as impressive as the previous two entries but is still worth a watch (especially for scenic imagery from Alaska). This collection comes recommended.
