Quantum of Solace Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 31, 2020

MGM and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the 2008 James Bond film 'Quantum of Solace.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel. Note that a 4K UHD SteelBook is also now available.

Quantum of Solace Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

Quantum of Solace's front and rear exterior panels are smooth, glossy, and fingerprint attracting. The front panel is both elegantly simple yet somewhat complex at the same time. A greenish-gold color appears at the top and grows quickly darker towards the bottom, where the transformation to near black is complete. Bottom left is a Bond silhouette, pistol aimed up and to the right. The bullet has exited the gun and can be seen towards the top right. It's like a millisecond freeze-frame with propellant extending from the gun's barrel and additional, almost bloody/watery red/orange flames extending from where the shot was fired. The film's title appears below center and towards the right in white letters. The letters "O" in "Of" and "Solace" are the "zeroes" in "007" which appears below with the "7" serving as a pistol grip in the iconic image. The rear panel is similarly designed in terms of color but there is no imagery. White studio logos and legalese appear at the bottom. The spine is a steady dark teal color. The film's title in white block letters appears center. White MGM and 007 logos are at the top and a white Blu-ray logo has been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The lone Blu-ray disc appears on a hub on the right-hand side. The inner print is very minimalist, offering what amounts to a blank dark, near black slate with large gray-blue "007" text at the bottom, only the top half or so of which is visible. There is a bit missing from the sides, too.

Quantum of Solace Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  5.0 of 5

Subjectively speaking, of course, this is a much nicer SteelBook than the rather boring, but minimally effective, UHD version. One could simply trade the UHD disc out but there's no room for the Blu-ray, which holds the supplemental content, so both it is. C'est la vie. Highly recommended.
