Overview

Quantum Leap: The Complete Series (2022-2024)

It's been nearly 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now, a new team, led by physicist Ben Song (Raymond Lee), has been assembled to restart the project in hope of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it. Everything changes, however, when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it. At Ben's side throughout his leaps is Addison (Caitlin Bassett), who appears in the form of a hologram only Ben can see and hear. She's a decorated Army veteran who brings level-headed precision to her job. At the helm of the highly confidential operation is Herbert "Magic" Williams (Ernie Hudson), a no-nonsense career military man who has to answer to his bosses who won't be happy once they learn about the breach of protocol. As Ben leaps from life to life, putting right what once went wrong, it becomes clear that he and the team are on a thrilling journey. However, Addison, the team know that if they are going to solve the mystery of Ben's leap and bring him home, they must act fast or lose him forever.

Quantum Leap: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker February 19, 2025

Bringing both seasons of the genre and time-hopping adventures of Ben Song (Raymond Lee) and his team together in one boxed set, 'Quantum Leap: The Complete Series' arrives on Blu-ray disc courtesy of Universal. This set collects all 31 episodes and features a recurring cast consisting of Ernie Hudson, Caitlin Bassett, Nanrisa Lee, and Mason Alexander Park, along with a sizeable list of guest stars including Deborah Ann Woll, Jewel Staite, Brandon Routh, and Robert Picardo. The seven discs are housed on three double-sided pages with the seventh disc located on a hub on the inside of the rear cover. An episode guide is found on the inner print. Boasting very solid technical merits, this set is devoid of on-disc supplemental material. The release comes packaged in an attractive slipbox, but a Digital Code is not included.

Recently canceled after just two seasons, Quantum Leap (2022-2024) left us just as the series was hitting its stride, and 31 episodes are all that we have to follow Ben Song (Raymond Lee) on his adventures through time (and not so much space) as he hops from body to body, attempting to fix what's wrong in each situation into which he leaps in his bid to return to the present. More of a continuation than a reboot, Ben and his team back at Quantum Leap HQ are fully aware of and occasionally reference the previous missions undertaken by Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) in the 1980s and 90s (aka Quantum Leap (1989-1993). As such, it doesn't attempt to retool the premise or the formula and instead simply places another character in a position similar to Beckett's. Fans of the original series should have no difficulty in acclimating to the series or its central conceit, though die-hards may miss Scott Bakula's boyish charm and earnestness and his interplay with Dean Stockwell. Fans of the original Doctor Who series, particularly those who enjoyed the period when Jon Pertwee's Doctor was Earthbound for a time, should also have no trouble warming to the series. Though Ben Song's adventures never really feature otherworldly antagonists, his link to the modern day and all of the technology and resources that this entails do provide him with a Doctor-like edge in his challenges.

When watching the conclusion of the second season, one has the sense that many more adventures for Ben and his team were beckoning. As it stands though, the action of the final moments, while several important issues are at least partially resolved, the conclusion, for as open-ended as it is, is fitting enough. It feels much less like a cliffhanger and simply leaves the viewer anticipating what comes next. Until such time as Quantum Leap (2022-2024) finds a new home on another network, these 31 episodes will have to suffice. Please follow the links below to read more about each season.

Quantum Leap: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Quantum Leap: The Complete Series has been given a strong and consistent 1080p presentation across all episodes. Detail levels are typically very high, and colors are nicely saturated. Each season does, unfortunately, have some small issues with the transfer, and as these discs are reproductions of the single-season sets that have already been released, they are found here as well. Though, again, they are largely minor and should not serve to dissuade any potential viewers. For a more detailed look at each season's video presentation, please follow the links below.

Quantum Leap: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Quantum Leap (2022-2024) may not break new ground or push the series' concept in a radical new direction like Battlestar Galacatica's reboot did, but it doesn't need to. The existing formula is sufficient to bring entertaining, light sci-fi time-traveling adventures to a modern audience who may not be inclined to seek out a thirty-year-old science fiction series that doesn't have the words Star Trek in its title. Raymond Lee does an outstanding job as Ben Song, and the episodes of the second season, many of which added Eliza Taylor and James Frain into the mix, showed the emergence of a series whose best days were just over the next hill. To fans of the show or newcomers looking for some solid and approachable science fiction thrills, Quantum Leap: The Complete Series comes recommended.
