Quadroon (1971)

In 1835, in New Orleans, wealthy, married Creole men can buy quadroon women and set them up in second households, where the women, trained in the arts of sexual pleasure, serve as their mistresses. These women, who are one quarter black and three quarters white, are introduced to potential buyers at special Quadroon Balls and are considered valuable property. When New Englander Caleb Wyckliffe arrives in New Orleans, he is naïve about the ways of that society and, soon cheated out of his savings by corrupt and powerful landowner Cesar Dupree, is reduced to earning his living. As a schoolteacher for young quadroons who hope to raise their value at the balls through education, Caleb meets Coral, a quadroon owned by a wealthy Creole, and wants to marry her. Although a sympathetic Creole, Antoine, tries to help the young couple, Caleb fights duels and risks his life for Coral, but ultimately dies.
