Psycho 4K Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 15, 2020
Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film 'Psycho.' The disc and digital
content is identical to that found in the wide release, which is currently only available in The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection. See the
'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Psycho 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

Simplicity is the order of the day for the Psycho SteelBook. The front and rear panels are predominantly black but not glossy-smooth;
fingerprints show but not to excess. The front image depicts a gray knife pointed top to bottom against a black background. Inside the knife is a
depiction of Marion's face, screaming in the shower and recreating the film's most famous scene. The film's title appears above her, breaking up the
knife in red against a black background. Hitchcock's name is attached, also in red. The rear panel is largely identical, replacing Marion and the film's
title with a
silhouette depicting the Bates home on the hill just beyond the motel. A Universal logo and copyright info appear in white bottom left, a bit bigger
than is comfortable. The spine is flat black with the film's title, again with Hitchcock's name, both in red, center. A Universal logo has been placed at the
bottom.
Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in
staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features black and white imagery. Norman Bates appears on the left, partially in
shadow, his right hand covering his mouth, his left held up beside his face. On the right is a bannister casting a shadow to the left from a light source
on the right in a scene from inside the Bates home.

Psycho 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

It's curious why Universal only released Psycho on UHD to SteelBook; perhaps the other three films from the UHD collection will arrive at a
later date. The SteelBook is very simple but effectively so. It also does away with the four film set's DigiBook packaging which is not friendly to basic
disc
handling. The UHD technical presentation is first-rate. Very highly recommended.
