Psych: The Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Martin Liebman December 21, 2023
Universal has released a monumental complete series (plus movies) collection for the hit TV show 'Psych." The set includes eight seasons, three
TV movies, and so many supplements that fans will be kept busy for months. Video and audio hold their own, even given the massive amount of
content on each disc.

Official synopsis:
'Psych' is a quick-witted dramedy about a young police consultant, Shawn Spencer (James Roday), who solves crimes with
powers of observation so acute that he's convinced Santa Barbara PD detectives into thinking he's psychic. With the reluctant assistance of his best
friend Gus (Dulé Hill), Shawn uses his skills of observation and charismatic personality to become the detective he was trained to be, opening his
own PI agency - Psych - and solving cases for an ever-suspicious, but grudgingly impressed, police force. With Shawn's fake psychic sleuthing and
sidekick Gus' nose for clues, the unlikely duo tackles countless murders and mysteries.
In the realm of detective/mystery shows,
Pysch carves out its own niche by combining comedy, which oftentimes borders on the ridiculous,
with the seriousness of crime within the tried-and-true "crime of the week" structure. The show is more than somewhat similar to both
Monk
and
The Mentalist, at least insofar as how the crimes are solved, in each
show by men with "extraordinary," but not "inhuman," mental prowess. But more like
Monk and less like
The Mentalist,
Psych stands apart for its more humorous approach to solving crimes and character interactions. So similar are
Psych and
Monk that
Psych premiered by pairing with
Monk, and USA continued to air them next to one another until
Monk
came to an end. With
Psych's premise so similar to
Monk, that timeslot could have been a death sentence for
Psych if not
for its ability to stand apart in its own take on the humorous approaches to solving crimes. Whereas
Monk’s humor plays on the main
character’s idiosyncrasies and obsessive compulsive disorder,
Psych turns to sleight of hand and deception to create its humor.
The show's main character, Shawn (James Roday), is gifted with keen observational skills and an eidetic memory that he uses to create the illusion
of physic abilities. Shawn’s frustration with the inabilities and ineptness of the Santa Barbara Police Department leads him into an accidental
consulting
job in which his "physic powers" help solve crimes. As the series progresses, Shawn and his sidekick Gus (Dule Hill) are forced to come up with
creative ways to continue the ruse of Shawn’s "powers" as various members of the police force become suspicious of him. James Roday’s ability to
channel the physic powers and then stop as needed is, in large part, what makes the show work, and his ability to finely tune the character out of
the gate and maintain the dual (and dueling) appearances stands as one of the main reasons why the show works as well as it does. Dule Hill,
Timothy Omundson, and Maggie Lawson make for a strong supporting cast.
Beyond the eight seasons, this set also includes three
Psych feature films (1080p):
Psych: The Movie (1:28:10),
Psych 2:
Lassie Come Home (1:28:30), and
Psych 3: This Is Gus (1:36:22).
Psych: The Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

This complete Psych collection features 1080p transfers across all eight seasons and three TV films. Early seasons play with a heavy grain
structure. Clarity and detailing are solid enough, offering good 1080p clarity to skin, clothes, and environments. Colors are nicely defined, lacking
nuance and punch but finding good stability to tonal basics. Clarity is improved a bit moving ahead from seasons four and five forward, offering a
cleaner digital
image that shows some residual noise. The image is smoother and obviously a good bit different from those early season film captures, but the sense of
overall clarity is fine, even if the image can look somewhat smooth. In the later seasons, color depth is improved, offering more robust hues, crisper
whites, and deeper blacks. Skin tones are more stable here as well. The image looks good across all eight seasons, and it does change a bit from start
to finish, but getting past the raw texture of any given season there is a good foundational image to be enjoyed through the full run.
The three feature films also look great, delivering solid detailing, well balanced colors, and not much noise or compression related artifacts, impressive
considering
that all three films are crammed onto a single disc, running around 4.5 hours in combined length. These look better than the show.
Psych: The Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

Universal releases Psych to Blu-ray with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack. The familiar opening title music can boom at reference
volume, but it holds foundational clarity and is certainly very wide. It's easily the most dominant force throughout the series in terms of raw audio
engagement. While there are some other elements here and there, musical or otherwise, that push the boundaries for engagement, depth, and overall
size and scale, the main theme holds as the most prolific highlight. Various examples of ambient and environmental fill are nicely integrated as well and
represent much of the surround activity heard in the show, which is not steady; the fronts carry the bulk of the material. Dialogue drives the show, and
it presents with good clarity, fine prioritization, and natural front-center placement for the duration.
The movies likewise feature DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtracks which are lively, active, and full bodied. Clarity is strong, spatial awareness
is solid, and dialogue is clear and centered for the duration. Musical engagement is largely the domain of the fronts, but a light surround push is also in
evidence.
Psych: The Complete Collection Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

To say that each season of Psych contains a massive collection of extras would be an understatement. While things slow down a little in
seasons seven and eight (and there are no supplements with the movies), there's enough here to keep even the staunchest Psych fan busy
for months on end. There's truly great supplemental value in this set. Each season ships in its own Amaray case. The three feature films share a
single Blu-ray disc in its own case. All are packaged inside a slip box.
