Ponyo Blu-ray Movie Review
One of the best Hayao Miyazaki gems receives a stunning collectible steelbook edition
Reviewed by Neil Lumbard June 23, 2020
An imagination powerhouse by visionary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away), Ponyo is an enchanting fairy tale for all ages about a goldfish princess of the sea who wants to become a human being after meeting the young boy Sosuke (who befriends her while at his home on the “cliff by the sea.”) As adventure unfolds, viewers will experience breathtaking animation and the enchanting music of Joe Hisaishi. One of the most visually spectacular of all of Miyazaki's films, the journey is well worth taking time and time again. A masterpiece.

Ponyo Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Ponyo remains one of the most spectacular of Miyazaki's films: it is an animated masterpiece that is appropriate for all ages while being just as engaging for adults as it is for kids. The visual aesthetic mesmerizes and the music sweeps one up in to the world of the story with ease. The Blu-ray is top notch (featuring a high bit-rate presentation) and the new steelbook edition is a stunning collectors edition for fans of the film. Highly recommended.
