Reviewed by Martin Liebman August 7, 2019
Warner Brothers and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. The disc and
digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below
for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

The SteelBook is very handsome: sharp, colorful, and the graphics are amazingly clear and detailed. The film's title appears above the center line at an
angle in neon blue and yellow. The key actors names -- Smith and Reynolds -- appear at the top, first name in blue, last in yellow, matching the title
aesthetic.
But the winner is the nighttime, noir-inspired view down a street in Ryme City. Countless storefronts and neon signs line the sides and the top. A wet,
reflective road appears bottom center. A Pikachu-inspired lightning bolt zigzags down the street with Pikachu at its end, gazing up at the city and the
colors
behind him. The colors have something of a metallic look to them, offering a light reflectiveness that is very attractive. The rear side features a more
prominent depiction of Pikachu, a head shot with features -- eyes, mouth, nose, hat -- clearly visible and
sharply rendered. He's gazing through a magnifying glass and standing in front of various neon signs alit at night in Ryme. The spine carries over the
black coloring. The film's title appears center in a shrunken-down version of that which appears on the front. Legendary and Warner Brothers Logos
appear at the
bottom. The case exterior sports a glossy surface that will attract and show fingerprints.
Inside, the digital copy code as well as a sealed Detective Pikachu trading card are tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs,
one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in
staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a shadowy shot of Pikachu and Tim on the left. The right
side is a fade to black. The only real point of interest there is a rather large billing block that fills about the bottom third of the panel.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Detective Pikachu's SteelBook is one of the nicest released this year. Superb colors and razor-sharp imagery appear front and back. The inner
print is a bit uninspired, but the sum total is absolute excellence. This is the version to own. Highly recommended.
