John Singleton's "Poetic Justice" (1993) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. The supplemental features on the release include new program with filmmaker Ryan Coogler and Regina King; archival audio commentary by John Singleton; deleted scenes; vintage trailer; and more. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

Criterion's 4K Blu-ray release of Poetic Justice is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. However, the Blu-ray has only a selection of supplemental features. To get Poetic Justice on Blu-ray, you must consider this three-disc set.
Please note that all screencaptures included with this article are taken from the Blu-ray included in the box set linked above. We have not provided downscaled screencaptures taken from the 4K Blu-ray.
The following text appears inside the booklet provided with this release:
"Undertaken by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, the 4K restoration of Poetic Justice was created from the 35mm original camera negative. A previous master approved by John Singleton was used as a color reference. The original 2.0 surround soundtrack was remastered from the 35mm magnetic track. Please be sure to enable Dolby Pro Logic decoding on your receiver to properly play the 2.0 surround track.
Colorist: Christian Lamie, Roundabout Entertainment and Illuminate Hollywood, Burbank, CA.
Image restoration: Illuminate Hollywood.
Additional restoration by Roundabout Entertainment.
Audio restoration: Sony Pictures Post Media Center."
In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with Dolby Vision. I also viewed the 4K restoration, in its entirety, in 1080p on the Blu-ray included in the box set linked above.
I do not have any previous home video releases of Poetic Justice in my library. However, given the quality of the 4K restoration and its presentations, on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray, it is very easy to declare that this is the end of the road for ii on the home video market. Indeed, all visuals I saw on my system looked stupendous, and I cannot imagine how a previous release could have matched even partially this type of quality. Admittedly, various sections of the film are deliberately shot to impress, so there is plenty of footage that looks naturally great. However, delineation, clarity, and depth are all at 'reference levels', and the density levels are as good as they could be. Color reproduction and balance are terrific as well. Because all primaries and supporting nuances are properly set and enormously healthy, virtually all of the outdoor footage constantly produces breathtaking visuals, some of which can be as striking as digital photographs. The Dolby Vision grade does plenty to enhance the strengths of these visuals as well, though I also liked a lot how the darker footage looked. There are no traces of any problematic digital corrections. Image stability is excellent.

There is only one standard audio track on this release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
The audio is very clear, sharp, and clean. I would describe the balance as excellent as well. However, some of the mass outdoor footage has a few uneven spots that are part of the original sound design. Dynamic contrasts are excellent, especially when gunshots are heard. The music has an important role, but it is nevertheless only a supporting one. I did not encounter any anomalies to report in our review.

4K BLU-RAY DISC

The opening sequence is beyond ironic. It satirizes the overpolished, artificial content that contemporary Hollywood films routinely deliver, and yet, immediately after it, Poetic Justice rushes to produce its own variations of it. It is unfortunate because one of Tupac Shakur's best performances is in it. I genuinely believe that had Shakur lived longer, smart producers would have started offering him big parts in very interesting films, primarily because of this performance. Criterion's release presents an outstanding new 4K restoration completed at Sony Pictures Entertainment. However, the 4K restoration is not offered on Blu-ray. If you need a Blu-ray copy of it, you must consider acquiring this three-disc set.
