Planes, Trains & Automobiles 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman January 13, 2025

Amazon and Paramount have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for the hilarious and iconic 1987 Comedy film 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the UHD wide release. Note that this is the second SteelBook release for the film; Paramount previously issued the film in Blu-ray SteelBook packaging in 2021. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

Paramount has lazily dropped 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' to UHD SteelBook with identical artwork from the 2021 issue. As with the last issue the front panel depicts Neal and Del sitting in the terminal, Neal on the left, Del on the right, under a flight information display board with the film's title written within it. The rear panel, again, depicts a burning airline ticket, center, around a dark blue background. The spine features the film's title, which unsurprisingly runs nearly its full length, with a Paramount logo at the top.

Inside, the two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print features the iconic image of Neal and Del sitting in the burned out shell of a car after they've been pulled over by police.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

In my review of the Blu-ray SteelBook, I commented that the SteelBook "works well enough" but lamented the absence of a UHD disc. Well, here it is. The same thing with a UHD disc. Paramount listened! (probably not to me, though). Anyway, I still love the movie, dislike the UHD transfer, and like the SteelBook "well enough." Now, if only Paramount would issue a third identical SteelBook but with a remastered UHD, then we'd be talking!
